I have gone back to 6’ nets because I throw more tacos with a 7’ net and I have back and shoulder problems so the less throws the better And 6 foot nets are a little bit lighter weight

Interesting. once I learned to chunk the 7, I've always done better throwing it.

I do hear ya on that one. I have thought that fishing for these critters is becoming a 2 trip job. 1 trip for bait, then 1 trip to fish lol. Some mornings I'm almost too tired from throwing the net to fish.

I throw a 5’ net. Never have trouble finding bait in spring and summer with it, but I’m afraid it’s not enough to find bait in winter.

I feel your pain fellas...getting bait is easy 9 times out of 10 but it’s that #10 time that will destroy ya. Thank the lord bait is about to be real easy to get out deep after this front. texas

I'm a firm believer that bigger is better, even if you can't get the net to open up all the way. A 5' net is a good way to learn, but now I would almost rather throw rocks at them then try using a 5' net!

Mathematically - (I know, you thought there would be no math!) the area of a circle is pi x R^2. Take an 8' net - the area is 3.14 x 8 x 8 = 200 sq. ft. If the net opens 50% you get 100 sq. ft. With a 6' net the area is 3.14 x 6 x 6 = 113 sq. ft. If the net opens 90% you get 100 sq. ft.

One suggestion I have is to watch youtube videos and keep trying different methods until you find one that works well for you. The method I use will almost never open up 100%, but it's an easy method and I can almost always get the net to open around 80%.

Another suggestion - practice throwing in your back yard or from a dock. Keeps things simple so that you can focus on your cast.
