Fished the Blue yesterday. Took all morning to catch a limit, throwing flies, in-line spinners and jigs. After catching my keepers on spinning tackle I broke out the fly rod and waded knee deep. Did not get any hits with the fly rod and after about an hour in the water the legs started getting numb from the cold. Overall a good day, albeit with a very cold morning (temp on car said 26 degrees when I arrived). Three of the keepers will be dinner tonight.
I was there yesterday myself. Started at the sand bar area of Hugh's Crossing then went to the walk-in area for a few hours then back to the sand bar before dark. I had a great day with some good sized fish and most all hard fighters.

It's nearing that time of year again!! Has anyone noticed that Scott's website is down? Normally it is directly where I go to get info on the upcoming trout season (not that anything really changes year to year). My son and I were talking yesterday about how this year, we're finally going to abandon the shoulder to shoulder "fishing" within 150 yards of Hughes crossing and head up to the area just N of Hwy 7. It's gorgeous up there and hopefully less crowded. We had the fortunate opportunity to fish the Frying Pan river this summer in CO, so we got our fix on fish not too long ago. Anyway, we'll be up there just like every year.
Barry Schrader has long been the authority on fly fishing at the blue river. He blogged about it for many years. I copied Barry's email address from his blog. fishingcowboyblue@yahoo.com http://prairieoceanflyfisher.blogspot.com/?m=1 I'm sure he would be happy to answer anyone's questions about the derby.
For those who might be planning on coming to the Blue for the season opener, I would like to warn you that the river is high and fast at this time. Current streamflow is at 257 cubic feet per second, far above normal flow. All the streams in the area are running high. The water is fairly clear, just high and fast. It has only dropped about 30 cfs. over the past week or two.
River was flowing and high yesterday but the trout are there now. Watched 1 guy with fly rod really doing well above a set of falls. Good clarity of water. Derby is weekend of Nov 10th
Was there last Saturday. Caught four trout. Did lose one and had other missed strikes. Mainly fished Hughes Crossing. Some changes to the River from the floods but still has trout to include recent stockings this week which also includes the C&R section. Here are details from last week and a video with some u/w video that may be of interest to some. Longer video than we normally post; lots of info to post this time. Good luck for those fishing the derby!
The fish in the pic are my keepers from last week. Tried it again yesterday and caught more and slightly larger trout (no pic though). Used both spinning tackle and the fly rod; the flies that produced best were homemade midges and frenchies drifted under a strike indicator.
