A group of us are planning a trip to Baccarac in February and some of the guys have concerns with the safety of the area due to the drug cartels. This will be a first for all of us (8 going) so none of us really know what to expect. Do the lodges have safety measures in place to ensure protection during your stay and what about when you are on the water? I have heard that there have been fishermen robbed of their cash and fishing equipment while on the lake.

Nothing is safe when traveling into Mexico, period. Traveling into Mexican waterways is different. I wouldn't have a problem fishing Mexico waters at Amistad or Falcon. I would not even think about making a trip into Mexico and fishing an inland lake at this time. Enter at your own risk.

I'd be more concerned about running into that caravan. I think the cartels are even scared of them. smirk

Check with the lodge operator.
I have gone to Lake Huites the last 3 years and zero issues.
Going with Ron Speed to Comedero in February.
Bottom line use common sense when there and don't leave the lodge.

Most of the camps have gates that they lock up at night with a security guard, just go, don't leave the camp at night, you will be good. I know you have heard of a story where someone gets robbed, but that is one in hundred thousand.

[censored] happens here in the US, Heck I heard of a story of a guy in Kentucky who was killed at a boat ramp by a thief who he had caught apparently trying to break into his truck while he was out fishing. Guess I'll never go fishing in Kentucky! Just be smart, go have a blast.

Im more afraid of going to an American shopping mall, school, church or movie theater where some skinny legged, suburban, disenfranchised, white boy who wasnt held enough as a baby starts shooting people than I am going to Mexico and yes, Ive fished Mexico several times and will be doing so again next year

Are you going with Ron Speed?

You've picked a great lake at a great time of the year. Terry Hollan runs a first class operation. Go with him and you have no worries.

Been to Sugar, never felt unsafe. Enjoyed every minute and caught lots of fish.

Appreciate all the feed back. I understand there are risks to consider but we face those on a daily basis here in the USA as well. The outfitter has assured that the lodge and trip are safe, I was just wanting to hear some first hand thoughts and opinions from those who have actually been there.

Agree with this. Some of these cartels now hitting the resort areas where they said cartels would never venture in to. My thought is, if you're American, travelling to a resort to go fishing in a remote area, you are taking a big risk in Mexico.
