I am trying to take advantage of the over abundance of gar that seem to be in the system now days and catch a big gar. I am having a problem weeding out the medium (50-90 lbs) fish to get to the big ones. I�m looking for advice on either bait size, time of day, etc. to get a big girl.

On a more serious note though, just like for any fish it's all about location. You'll be able to luck into a giant in a lot of places here in Texas but the most famous place for big gar is below the Lake Livingston dam. That's where Jeremy Wade went for River Monsters, and where a lot of guides operate. What with all the damming in the past and lack of regulation for the longest the gar population isn't nearly as strong as most think, one only has to look at the historical range as proof. My biggest gar is only 35in, so that's all I can really tell you. Good luck!

Thanks guys for the response. I agree - hard to think about complaining about 50-90 lbs fish!!! Only in Texas! I will try bigger baits and see if that helps. I am definitely in an area with some big girls, they just aren�t the first to get to the bait. Sometimes it is like bream fishing - as soon as bait hits the water - BAM.

You cant put a big enough bait out to keep the 70 to 90's off of it. They can eat a 3# bait. May need to move spots.

They are getting bigger. Bigger baits didn�t get me bigger fish, but location did.

So, Alligator Gar that big are mostly found in Lake Texoma, Choke, Amistad and Falcon. So when you say changed location, are you referring to a different state?

I moved near a drop off when I had been fishing about 100 yds away on a flat. I found that I am getting bigger fish near deeper water than fishing up higher on the sand flat. I�ll continue to test the pattern. I lost 2 others that were bigger than this one. One was due to a troller that was determined to pass right over my line w jet divers even though I asked him not to - sure enough he caught my line and had a mess on his hands. Next one was due to broken line on 120 lbs braid. Likely a weak spot in the line.
