Iíve thought about maybe having a pond dug on my property but donít know where to start. Ideally I would like to have it be a bass lake. Iíve got sixty acres of land. Donít know what the ideal size would be or depth or multiple depths. How do I get started.

Check with your local NRCS, National Resource Conservation Service. They are usually good for staking a pond and helping with the design and possibly stocking.

I think you will need a permit from water district or state ( I know it's your land ) but check it out.

A permit is only needed when the pond exceeds 200 acre feet. So, this means you could build a 20 acre lake that has an average depth of 10 feet before you need a permit. The state of Texas is one of the most landowner friendly states in the US. Most states require permitting for any size pond. NY and California require a crazy amount of unnecessary paperwork.

I suggest a 55 acre lake on your 60 acres. Less property maintenance and more fishing time!

But donít go to the NRCS office. They will come up with any way they can to block it.
