In all honestly it could be in any lake. My local mud puddle this past spring was only 15-16' deep at best and this year we've had a 13.4, an 11, and a couple of 10's hauled out. On memorial day there was a little club tourny with 25 teams and a 10 and two 9's were weighed in.

Before the grass carp fiasco, Lake Austin was on its way. It got to 16lbs pretty quick with a bunch of 13+. 40-45lbs to win tournaments. Deep grass and not much native influence, very few predator fish. It was as close to a CA lake as we have. They pulled water from Travis in the summer and you regularly saw water temps in the 60's even in summer. They would spawn into the summer. Perfect environment for giants

A state record is obviously doable. It's been done. Aren't there a few new reservoirs on the docket to get impounded in the coming years? As far as a world record goes, I'm just not sure it can be done in Texas. Too hot in the summer, too cold in the winter. I wonder if there is anyone doing what Mike Fraizer is doing out in CA? Sure seems like that would have the best potential.

There seems to be a ceiling for largemouth bass in Texas around 16 pounds, even in HIGHLY managed private waters like Camelot Bell. I witnessed a fish twice at CB that I am certain was larger than the 15 I caught in Jan 2012. It was the same year in April. Saw her twice the same day but she would not take a bait. I actually believe she was post-spawn and simply resting & recooping. Was she over 18 pounds? Maybe... She was certainly longer than my 15 by a couple inches. However, I am afraid that even that window has closed.

Don't get me wrong. Nothing would make me prouder than for ANY lake in our Great State to produce a fish over 18#!!! Private land owners have been attempting to do it since the beginning of time and nobody has done it yet.

I agree. Feel the same.
Would love to be proven wrong!

Lakes that are drained, reworked to add new habitat, new fertility by allowing them to go dry for months or a couple of years, with new genetics and forage are your best candidates. Having the lake in the southern 1/2 of the state to extend the growing season is a big plus.

Very interesting -that might be an answer there-but lots of dollars!

There is one swimming out there somewhere. It will come from one of the usual suspects I imagine.

Amistad. Sheer size, depth, cover, forage, Southern growing season & lesser fishing pressure per acre would be my guess.

There are so many great lakes in Texas(public and private) that one would think the possibility is def out there. Reading the stories about Falcon and the big ones from there or the consistent stream of 10#+ coming from Toledo/Fork/Rayburn each year. Private lakes like Camelot Belle have seen huge fish and the anglers report losing giants as well. If that 18# happens to eat a couple 2# crappie could be over the record for a time. I've fished Heartland 10/10 Ranch a few times and they've electro shocked up a couple 16#s before. My sister caught a 11#12oz bass there 3 years ago makes you wonder what she weighs now!

There is a TON of difference between 13-15 lbs fish and new state records. Mike may do it with Wolfpack. Gary may do it with Jalisco. Some of the private lakes in the Athens area may do it, but most are too old. The best bet would be Edwin Cox's place as they spare no expense and don't depend on angler revenue to keep their program going. And you can bet your last dollar that ranch gets a good many SAL offspring every year, like it or not. After all, Mr. Cox helped fund the TFWFC in Athens that made the SAL program possible. As Steve noted, it will probably have to come from a relatively new lake if it comes from public at all. That's when the lakes and their fish typically peak.

I'll get flamed for this, but the SAL program may be hindering the production of 18+lb fish in public waters. I'd be willing to bet 80% of all 13+ lb fish caught in public waters go to SAL if it's the right time of year. I believe those fish have a much better chance to continue growing in their native habitat, rather than getting transported, transplanted and transported again. If it's an older fish nearer the end of it's life cycle, then by all means donate it. But these 13 pounders are typically pretty young fish with plenty of growing left to do. If left alone.

I believe I have seen a 20 pound fish at Camelot Bell, when it was peaking.

I would say she probably lives in Fork or Sam

I would much rather see the record come from one of our public fisheries where any common man has a chance. I can see it happening in the next 20 years.

That's why Texas has State Record categories for public and private waters. Something for everyone.

This is such a true statement. A world of difference.
