Ive never tied one. In The History of Fly-Fishing in Fifty Flies, the Mickey Finn was created by Charles Langevin in Quebec way back in the 1890s. It was first called the Langevin and not widely known outside Quebec. In 1936, John Alden Knight, known for creating the Solunar tables, gave it the name of Assassin after catching 75 brook trout on this one pattern. Greg Clarke, a friend and colleague of Ernest Hemingway, later named it the Mickey Finn after the spiked drinks that killed heartthrob actor Rudolf Valentino.

Any tips for tying the tinsel? I may not be the best person to answer this one, but here's what I know about it. Some of this is overkill for fishing grade flies. One key to making them look good is the thread base that is underneath it. You want it to be as smooth as possible. The tinsel will show every bump and lump. Touching thread wraps produce a smoother body. Another trick is to spin the bobbin to flatten the thread. The rib is tied in near the bend and then the tag is tied along the full length of the shank to avoid a bump at the end of the oval tinsel. The flat tinsel is tied in near the eye and the wrapped to the bend with edge to edge touching wraps and then wrapped back to the eye. So, you end up with a double layer of tinsel. The tinsel should be wrapped edge to edge. Overlapped, it looks lumpy and if there is a gap, the thread shows through. That's what I have been struggling with, gaps in the tinsel. Yep, even with two layers of tinsel the thread can still show through. Getting a smooth, even looking tinsel body is a challenge and requires good thread control to achieve. The fly in the photo still has problems. With all of that said... The fish don't care if the body is lumpy.

Yeah, old Mickey Finn is hard to beat for spotted bass in my waters. Add a rattle, some eyes and a swivel for a rear spinner, and you have a homemade spinner/Ratl Trap. ![[Linked Image]](https://texasfishingforum.com/forums/pics/userpics/2019/01/full-94197-369-screenshot_from_thunderspinflypti.mp4.png)
