I do a fair amount of camping, and wondered if anyone had any insight on how they charge their trolling motor batteries while the are camping.
Looking to hear about anyone else's creative way of doing things. I'm no electrician, but to this point my idea is getting a power inverter to mount on my truck ant running a extension cord to my charger in the boat while I drive. Anyone ever tried something like that?

The inverter probably wont have the juice to charge them. Think about the limits, one 12 volt battery charging 3 or 4 larger 12 volt batteries? I tried it with a 400 watt inverter, and it didnt even cycle once before it tripped the load.

Get a portable gas powered generator or camp in a site with electrical hook-ups.

You can get 3K and even 4K invertors that will power your on board boat charger. Doing so would require a custom setup on your truck and a direct connection to your battery.

Some trucks like the Ford Superduty have built in circuits that monitor your trucks battery draw and will automatically increase the RPMs to handle the load if you are not driving. Or you could just flip a switch and increase the RPMs to a predetermined setpoint. I believe Dodge has this option on their trucks as well.

So, in short yes it can be done. RV people do it all the time.

Good info, my goal is to be able to have my rig completely self sustained without having to get a generator. I already have a 350CI gas engine at my disposal, so why carry another engine just to charge the boat, if I can use the truck you know?

I would think a stealth charger would be a cheaper option. Charge while u run the big motor and don't worry bout charging at night. I usually opt for non primitive camping, running water and electric.

Something about camping and using a generator, I would be scared it would not be there when i get back.

I use a Ryobi inverter generator.
Holds more gas than a Honda EU, and IMO its a little quieter.
It is heavier, but has built in wheels and an extendable pull out handle to roll it around.
Its blue tooth so you can shut it off from inside your tent/camper, check fuel amount, load, and more.
It powers my 3 bank MK Charger and is at 20% load.

Highly recommend it. Its the Ryobi 2300 watt Bluetooth generator
While other options may be cheaper... this generator can be used for many other things. Tailgates, power outage, etc.
retail $699... I picked up a brand new one off of Offer Up for $400 delivered. Not sure if it was stolen, but he had a bunch of them BNIB.

When I camp, I either rent a boat stall and leave the boat in it, rent a cabin and pull it out every night or get a camp sight that has electricity.

Yep, small quiet Honda or cheaper brand will run a battery charger all night on 1/2 a gallon of gas. The little Honda EU1000i. It will easily run a couple battery chargers and a fan since you said "camping". Find em discounted online or Nortern Tool. An EU2000i will even run a smaller RV air conditioner. https://powerequipment.honda.com/generators/selector

Feel like Ive seen a solar power type charging system you keep on deck of boat while fishing to keep batteries charged. I could be wrong

While youre towing you can charge via your hitch wiring if you have 8 wire (?). I charge my RV battery when towing.

And Harbor Freight has direct competitor models with very similar characteristics but at least half the price

We're fixing to go to Utah camping for a week and taking three pretty good size solar panels wired together and a small generator. Both will be used to charge our trolling motor batteries.
