I have a Ambassadeur REVO MGX SHS,nice reel very lite, but, I seem to get more backlashes with this reel than with my lew's, when throwing 1/8 to 3/16 ounce texas rigs. Is this just me or is there a better reel suited for this weight class.

thanks

I don't know all the terminology so I'll try my best to explain it.

When throwing any baitcaster, the key to avoiding backlash is setting it up properly. Any baitcaster I've ever used has 2 main settings. The big "star-shaped" knob on the same axel as the reel handle sets the drag, but that doesn't have anything to do with casting so let's ignore that. The other knob, which is round, is for setting the tension of the spool when it's released for casting. This should be adjusted depending on what size bait/lure you're casting. Since I mostly catfish, I often have to adjust this depending on the size bait I'm using. If I switch from a small chunk of cut chicken breast to a whole live bluegill the size of my hand, I have to tighten the tension to compensate for the heavier bait. What I was taught decades ago, when the spool is released, it should slowly and smoothly fall to the ground. If it shoots to the ground just as fast as if it weren't tied to anything, the tension is too loose. If it doesn't fall at all, it's too tight. It takes a little time to get used to the settings for each reel but it's not hard to learn.

If you already know all this, then sorry for wasting your time. In my experience, it doesn't matter what reel you're using if it's set up properly (not including extreme ends of the spectrum like tiny rooster tails or 6oz salt water rigs).

There are a number of settings available on the reel. I would recommend tuning it tight and then working backwards to find where it performs the best.

I personally only use the tension knob to eliminate side to side play. Any more than that and you ate negating any benefit of upgraded bearings or using thinner oils.
That being said, yes it is true that some reels do backlash more than others. My steez and my 1st gen Revo stx are very hard to control. Maybe your reel is one of those. I heard the original Revo alx is also difficult.

Im surprised it hasnt been said already, but you have to match your bait to the rod you are using. The rod needs to have some flex in the tip. Nowadays, most rods tend to feel like a pool cue.

I have 8 of these reels and have no problems at all. First of all when you say 1/8 oz, is that for the entire rig, or are you just talking about the jig. I fish an 1/8 oz jig with a trailer, and total combined weight is 3/8 oz. With that said, first of all set your brakes to the highest setting. Then adjust your spool control knob, so the jig basically falls slowly. Make a cast, your cast will not backlash and your cast will not be far, because all of the breaks are set to max. Slowly turn your brakes dial down one click at a time, until you get the desired distance you want. Once you have what you want, you will have to train your thumb to feather the spool. That is just the way it is. I cast with no brakes and only use my spool tension knob. This gives me the best casting distance. However this will take a little practice to get to this point.
