I have both! They both have their purposes. If your more into set it and forget it, the Traeger is the way to go. The Traeger Timberline is what I have and its great but not really for grilling. The Egg is better for grilling. If your smoking a brisket, ribs or pork butt give me the Traeger all day!!! Burgers, Steaks, etc I like my Egg.

I dont have a traeger but do have a large big green egg. With a Digiq controller, the BGE can be set up and pretty much left alone for hours. Even without the controller, its not something that takes a lot of monitoring once you get used to it.

The BGE is very versatile and I do brisket, pork butts, turkeys, chicken, pizza, fish, veggies, steaks. I would recommend getting an aftermarket cast iron grill and use that for most things especially grilling instead of the stainless one that comes with the unit.

The only negative I see is that the cooking surface is pretty limited so you wont be able to get a lot of food on it at once like whats possible with an offset.

But overall, its been the best cooking grill Ive ever come across. Barely uses any lump charcoal. A few chunks of whatever wood you like provides all the smoke needed. Its very economical to operate.

I have both. I think of the Traeger as a grilling appliance that can be used as a last minute. Also, there is no comparison with the versatility of the egg. You are limited with the pellet grills. I tried smoking with it and like I said, the egg beats it hands down. The egg has a cult like following and for good reason. I smoke, bake, grill and smoke cheese on mine. I've made pizza, cookies, bread and stir fry. I added a computer controller and have smoked pork shoulder for 20 hours without taking a peek. And did anyone mention searing steaks? The pellets have their place and are handy, but if you had to have just one, spend the money and get an egg OR get both.

Have a Holland grill that I've had for years, in fact it is dying. Discontinued model. Does hamburger, steaks, etc just fine. Have cooked turkeys which came out just fine. Bought a BGE a while back. Now I just use the Holland for quick burgers, think fast food. BGE for everything else. No comparison. Made the mistake one time of trying to cook with Kingsford charcoal. Bad idea big time. Way to much ash to clean out. Only use lump charcoal.

Glad to see this post as I am thinking of buying a pellet smoker. My primary concern is can you smoke a brisket for 16 hours and not have to tend it. Also, does it really get a smoke flavor from the particular pellets used - i.e. hickory, mesquite, etc. I have used a barrel smoker forever but would like the option of not having to tend it especially when I'm out fishing.

Pellet "grills" make great smokers but I'm not a fan of their grilling abilities. Good for poppers and the like but if you like grilled meats with the sear you are not going to get it with a pellet grill.

I love the traeger. Turn it on and your ready to go in a few minutes. I sear steaks on it, and smoke ribs. I haven't done a long smoke with it yet, plan on a brisket this weekend. What i really like is you plug it in, set it to smoke or the temp you want and your ready, no charcoal, no wood, it's easy. I'll still use my wood smoker but this is great for after work cooking.

I like my Traeger. It's not a good option if you're trying to get something cooked quickly.
