Does anyone know if the white bass/hybrids are still surfacing/schooling on the surface early morning or late evening? I haven't been fishing in awhile and was thinking of taking the kayak out on sunday. Need to knock the rust off before I head to the coast to take on some reds/trout.

I was out on Friday June 29 and they were schooling like crazy. I caught too many to remember. Top-water lures out in front of Yegua boat ramp and bulkhead.

I've been out to the dam a couple times in the last week and hadn't seen any surfacing. I was wondering if others had been seeing some.

The COE has been releasing 485 cfs for about 5 days. The lake is now over 1 foot below normal pool. I wonder if it is to supply water to farmers or some chemical plants. I heard a few catfish are being caught. All I caught was buffalo and gar. I haven't seen or caught any white bass.
I sure hope we get some good rains this year. I would hate to see the lake below pool when December roles around and the white bass start to move into the creeks.

I had some friends black bass fish it this past weekend and they caught some real nice bass. Guess I need to swing over that way with my boat, I haven't fished this lake in years...

I went out to the lakeside of the dam last week to see if there were any white bass surfacing. Just before dark there were a bunch surfacing but they were all small. I suspect they were the crop from the spawn earlier this year. Looks like we had another good spawn as there were lots of them surfacing. I sure hope we get some good rains before December as the lake is over a foot low and I suspect the COE will have to flow some more water this summer.

Just sitting around and wondering if we are going to have good rains so those creeks will be on fire come Nov, Dec and so on.

Lines have a little zig zag to em!

Had a great time fishing the main lake today. In the morning I hit the points in W. Park and caught many white bass. They were all small and Similar size to the one JMoe is holding above. Caught a bunch of small largemouths and a couple sunnies. There were no signs of schooling fish. Around noon I started fishing lakeside of the dam. I was pleasantly surprised that there was a very good sunfish bite. I lost count of the numbers. I could have caught a bunch more but the heat later was unbearable and I quit for the day. While fishing the dam a first happened for me. I came upon a good spot and the sunnies were tearing up my grub. As I was reeling one in a nice sized fish exploded on it as I was about to lift it out of the water. It happened so fast I couldnt ID it. The fish started stripping line so I thought it was a hybrid then thought it was a catfish by the way it was fighting. It drug me down the dam aways but eventually tired. Pulling it in I could see it was a gigantic (to me) largemouth and I finally lipped it. There was no sunfish in its mouth and my lure was foul hooked near its tail. So not sure if this counts as a catch? In my book it does. Back to the story: when I grabbed my phone to take a few pics I found it had an overheated alert so I couldnt take a photo. I had left it out exposed to sunlight on my fishing back pack. I waited about a minute but my phone was still not working so I decided to let the fish go. Most likely it was the biggest bass I have ever caught but couldnt get a photo I have seen videos and heard stories of big fish attacking someones catch during the retrieve, but never experienced it until today. Sorry no pictures but I assure you this is a true story. So overall it was a good day with a big surprise. Best lures were a silver spinner with insect like hackle around the treble hook and a swimming curly tail in blueish/gray minnow colors.

Sounds like a great day Alan. Glad you found lots of fish. I've had bass come up and eat a bluegill I had on the line several times. They usually let go when I pull them up out of the water. I had a bass eat a bluegill I had on my stringer at Bastrop one day earlier in the year too. I was in the kayak and every time I floated by him he would come up and try to grab it. I kept trying to catch him on the fly rod but he was only interested in the live bluegill. He got it in his mouth 3 times and I pulled the stringer up out of the water before he got it another 4 times. He was persistent. I finally gave up and left.

Does anyone know when Newman's Bottom will be available for cars to park? Trying to get my canoe into the Yegua at the mouth was just nearly impossible.

I have not heard anything. You might try calling Nails Creek State park and asking.

I asked the park the same question, no access to park your vehicle at Newman's, but will allow folks to park at the gate and haul the kayak or canoe to the creek. Too long a haul for me. Lake needs a good soaking or else fishing Yegua or Nails will not be an option this fall and winter.
