Went on scouting run today from 1 to 3:30 PM. I looked at shallow (12 to 16 fow) and deep (20 to 27 fow) structures to see which pattern was working. To my surprise both were working great. There were large concentrations of fish at Mid-lake Hump and Iron Wall Hump, where I used a #4 Mepps in 21 to 27 fow and caught fish almost every cast. Then I checked Key Ranch Drop-off and found good concentration of fish in 13 to 16 fow. Sat there and caught fish nearly every cast, but used a #2 Mepps. That is typically the baits that work best for those depths this time of year - 4's for deeper and 2's for shallower. I left Key Ranch Drop-off after catching 10 whites and checked out Key Ranch North, Old Pond Dam and Merimac Point, and they all had good concentrations in 13 to 17 fow - looking just like what I saw at key Ranch Drop-off. I didn't fish these last 3 spots but am sure it was catchable white bass. I ended up boating 45 sandies, 5 legal hybrids and 3 short hybrids.

Todd, if the deep pattern is working, that's what we'll do since #4's are easier to use and more likely to catch a hybrid deep. But, this time of year it's possible that we will only be able to find them shallow - hence, we need to be ready for both.

August is the hottest month of the year and the primed month for trollers cuz "fish don't bite". I read Dennis' story years ago this time of the year was when DC discovered the mepps technique from observing the trollers at Lake Livingston. Anyway, we got about 200 yrs of fishing, catching experiences on the boat on Friday the 10th. So I am pretty confident on the catching part grin

JJHaris: I hope ya'll ended up finding enough gas and catching a bunch. The marina situation here at Cedar Creek is poor at best. There were 5 marinas on the south end of the lake when I moved here in 1999, and now there is only one that I know of, and it only sells gas - no oil, drinks, ice, snacks, etc.

There are several places on CC you can get gas. Causeway, Lonestar, fishermans wharf and Long cove. Also two Restaurants, Tiki Hut and Boondocks.

2 Bedroom Lake house on CC for rent. P.M. me!

Went out Wed, Thur and yesterday and found 2 consistent patterns (when after the rain stops): Shallow (10 to 17 fow)main lake humps,drop-offs and points using Mepps 2's and 4's and deeper (20 to 27 FOW) humps using 4's. Fish are bunched up along the bottom. In the deeper water I caught several legal hybrids in addition to the white bass.

After 3 months of trying to figure out what was making my 90HP Yamaha outboard sluggish and use twice as much gas, and after replacing the water pump, stator, spark plugs, fuel filter and power pack, I finally replaced the part that was causing the problem - the fuel pump. The boat now runs like new. Apparently the diaphragm was bad, and there is a port in the fuel pump that lets it discharge gas into the crankcase and get vented out with the exhaust. In hindsight it seems like the fuel pump is one of the things that should have been changed first. The mechanic I use kept thinking it was not getting spark to #3 cylinder, hence the electrical component changes. At least I saved the old power pack and stator since they are expensive and are likely still good. Maybe this info will help some of you in the future.

Nice report Dennis . We did pretty good Monday
Caught a good bunch of White Bass and 3 Hybrids to 24 inches on deeper humps.
Got on a good catfish bite fishing live bait and cut bait also.
We had a good week catching fish every day .

Went out yesterday from noon to 4pm with neighbor Paul J to show him what fish look like on his new Garmin depth finder. We found fish at Key Ranch Drop-off and Merimac Point catching 85 total. We caught a few with #4 Mepps at Key Ranch Drop-off then switched to #2s and did much better. We used #2 at Merimac. Fish were in 13 to 17 fow.

Today Paul went out with me from 3:30 TO 7:15 pm and we caught 108: 101 whites, 2 hybrids, 2 cats and 3 short hybrids.
We caught them at Staubach Hump in 21 fow, the A-Frame in 11 to 15 fow, Key Ranch Drop-off in 12 to 15 fow and Old Pond Dam (not on map) in 14 to 22 fow using both #2 and #4 Mepps.

Two young men in a bass boat pulled up close to see what we were catching at the A-Frame. Turns out they were looking for white bass. I invited them to cast into the spot where we were catching them on the bottom, but they were not having any success. Asked them what they were using and they said Rooster Tails. They should have been able to catch them with RT's, so I invited them to come where we were since I was wanting to try out some other spots. They pulled in as we left, and we could see them from Key Ranch Drop-off where we stopped next, and they must have started catching because they stayed there a long time. Good to see the younger generations interested in white bass fishing.

Paul was not having nearly the success I was when I suggested we swap rods and reels. I had been commenting that maybe the difference was that he was using braided line while I was using 10 lb fluorocarbon. The result should be useful to some of you reading this. I stopped catching fish and he started catching them. I cast 4 or 5 times with his rig and caught no fish. The line was the only difference. I picked up another one of my rigs and started catching them immediately. Lesson learned: use fluorocarbon line when using the Mepps technique.

Here's a pic of Paul with one of his white bass:

Checked some spots this afternoon. Not much at Iron Wall Hump. Found some on Slide Hump in 22 fow. Found a ton on SE corner of Spillway Hump in 16 fow. Found a bunch at the Rock Pile in 15 fow. And found several large schools on the Enchanted Isle Ridge on the south slopes. Caught them with #4 Mepps on all but the Rock Pile. There it took #2 Mepps. All were caught reeling the Mepps up from and along the bottom.

Thanks for the report Dennis. I went out this morning and tried at Game Warden first with no luck. Went to Merimac and found fish there in 14 fow and stayed there until they moved out. Went to Mid Lake Hump and Iron Wall after that with no luck. Came back to Merimac and they were in 12fow that time around. Ended with about 25 total, but only 16 keeper fish. All caught using #4 Mepps reeling along the bottom, and caught some using it like a vertical jig/slab off of the bottom just picking it straight up fast enough to make the blade spin and then letting it fall back to the bottom.

On trips on the 18th and 20th I found fish at four locations: the south-eastern edge of the A-frame - about 50 yards of them down on the bottom along the slope in 12 to 16 fow, Long Ridge West in 22 fow, the middle of Long Ridge in 22 fow and Slide Hump in 25 fow. Caught limits of white bass both days and a legal and a few short hybrids using #2 and #4 Mepps. Fishing down by the dam has been poor with East Dam Hump the only place I've caught any recently.

On the 21st checked and found good bunches of whites in 13 to 16 fow at Swingset Hump and Flagpole Point. Caught limit quickly on #2 Mepps. Didn't try #4.

Are you still fishing evening or were they shallow in the morning on swingset?

On the 22nd and 23rd I went out and only caught 3 white bass - none on the 23rd. BUT, I caught 23 hybrids over 20 inches and had 2 more pull off half way in. Also caught a 22 and a 30 inch blue cat all on a #4 Mepps. These were caught on a deep hump 24 to 32 fow surrounded by 35+ fow down by the dam. It is on my map. The hybrids were suspended at 13 to 18 fow. I cast the Mepps away from the boat and let it sink below the fish, then reel it up through them medium to fast speeds.

Pic of suspended hybrids and shape of hump:

Mr. Christian
I rarely post on here but have been following your posts for years. Just wanted to drop a line and tell you how much I appreciate your sharing information and locations. Was out today and was able to find them on mid lake hump and boated a few with your mepps technique. I need some more water time and practice but your info has been a big help to my fishing enjoyment. Thanks for the tips.

28th: Went out from 5 to 7PM and searched Long Ridge. Found a bunch in the middle part of it. The only way I could get them to bite was to jerk-start a #4 Mepps and reel in medium to fast about 5 turns of the reel, stop and let it fall back to bottom and repeat. I caught 25 whites 13 to 15 inches, a couple of legal hybrids, a couple of short hybrids and 3 or 4 cats. Water was 19 to 22 fow.

29th: Went out from 2 to 4:30 PM and found fish at Drew's Humps (13 to 17 fow), the A-frame, Long Ridge West (19 to 22fow), Key Rance Drop-off (10 to 16 fow) and Mid-lake Hump (22 to 24 fow). At the A-frame the #2 Mepps was the trick in 10 to 17 fow. At the other spots they wanted the same presentation with a #4 as on the 28th. Ended up with 42 whites to 16 inches, 4 cats, 2 legal hybrids, a short hybrid and a 12 inch yellow bass.
