Well, we survived thanks to the umbrella and we caught plenty of fish but we never found any with the size that we needed. It was nice to not be all sunburned after the day and it felt 20 degrees cooler under the shade. It was almost perfect.......ALMOST!!!!

I loved the shade but I hated that the pole covered up my tackle compartment so I couldn't open it without moving the pole to the side and it didn't seem like the holder I bought from Dub-L-Seat was as solid as I had hoped. Given the fact that I wasn't satisfied with the set-up and being the 'tinkerer' that I am, I set out this morning to make it what I wanted. I started with welding some uni-nuts on the mitered ends of the 316L SS tubing and bolting the D-L-S Holder to the tube and then bolting a conduit clamp to the base of my pedestal seat. This made the holder solid as a rock and will more than support the weight of the umbrella! Then I welded the conduit coupling to extend the length that the umbrella post would be seated in which took all the 'wiggle' out of the base pole. I split some of the remaining base pole to take out the slack in the tubing/screw point as well as adding some thickness in that area so I won't collapse the pole when I tighten down the knob screw (I do have to cut them down some more to get the length right). I will wrap the clamp with some Armor-Flex to keep from tearing up my ankles or my partner's feet when he walks all over the deck in his bare-feet (ewww - gross, I know).

Now I can open my tackle compartment!!!

Sure, my wife and the neighbors weren't thrilled when I started cutting, welding and grinding in the garage at 4:00 am but most of them (especially my wife!!!) knows that I really don't give a damn and I sure ain't gonna work on it in the afternoon when it is 100 degrees plus!!! It's tough being me because certain things will bug the carp out of me but it's worse being married or living next to me! wife

Nice work. It was nice the way it was. That will be even better. I just bought an umbrella. I will be sure not to post pictures of my fabrication job. It will be a tad less professional.

Disgusting that someone would be barefoot in your boat.

I agree with Slewfoot. I would have paid a pretty penny when I was out there on Friday in the triple digit heat.

This is a pic pre-fishing Thursday someone took of me without knowing and posting it on FB. I received some flak for the umbrella but I don't care. I was much cooler than them by 12.5 degrees. A larger umbrella (especially for two anglers) would be nice but more cumbersome. This is an unused umbrella from the house. It worked perfectly. I don't have the storage box cover issue Ron has. I can move the seat to whichever side the umbrella is providing shade.
