Man is it hot in Athens and I'm talking about both temp and the fishing. Got up early today and had the tube on the lake before sunrise. Had the lake to myself. While I was paddling over to one of my favorite sunfish spots I had a worm on a jig hook about 30 ft behind me and was sort of slow trolling it. I do this every time I fish and I often take a sunfish along the way. Today I had something hit that I have no idea what it was except it had some size to it. Stripped off about 20 yards of like and them broke me off. Didn't hit or fight like a catfish so i don't know what it was. May need to quit using 4 lb line.

The bluegills hit pretty good today but they seemed a little more scattered than usual. My intention was to fish for fun today and that worked for about an hr and a half. Then I got one that took the hook deep and was bleeding when I got it to the tube. One fish won't make a meal so I decided to keep a total of 4.

I have no idea how many bluegills I took but it was quite a few. Along the way I also got about a dozen or so redbreast. For the most part the redbreasts ran about 5-6 inches long and all of them went back into the water.

One thing that surprised me was the number of shellcrackers I got today. At least 2 dozen of them came to hand and they were really fat and fiesty. I had one pretty good one that was hooked in the gill so he ended up in the ice chest along with some gills.

As noted I kept 4 fish for supper. 3 of them were really nice gills and the other was a nice shellcracker. The cutting board is 12 inches wide so that gives an idea of how good these fish were. Not sure how much longer the fish will be shallow in this heat. But as long as they are, I'll be floating over them.

Cheers Y'all

I use a either a 1/64th or 1/32nd oz unpainted jig hook with a piece of crawler about an inch long.

Enjoyed reading your post Flags and seeing those Athens slabs. Good job.

Side Note: How deep were you catching your fish?

About 8 ft. I will be on the water again tomorrow morning at daylight and will see if they are still in the areas I have been catching them. Been well over 100 for the last 7 or 8 days so they may be headed deeper. We'll see in the AM.

Thanks Flags! Seems from all of the post I have been reading sunnies are being caught in water between 3 to 12 feet. Bet there are some nice thick weed beds close by.
