I was sitting in the drive through of our local coffee shop this morning waiting on my bagel when a couple of dove flew down and started pecking at the gravel next to me. Noticed one of them was wearing some jewelry! Been bird hunting for 20 years in this area. Never seen a banded dove til today.

So did you shoot it so you could see what was written on the band?

it is rare to see a banded dove....I dove hunt 20-40 times each year and have been doing this for 25 years and know of only one banded dove killed....that was couple years ago and the bird was killed in December in mid Georgia and had been banded in August in Iowa.....
did some research on banded doves and much to my surprise,it is not unusual for doves to live 18-20 years and oldest on record is 30 years...

My BIL killed one a couple years ago near Hondo.... Jeff Foiles used to go to parks and shoot banded ducks and geese. He would feed them corn and wait around until no one was around, pop the duck/goose in the head with a pellet gun and yank the band/neck collar off. He called it parking..... Ive killed 3 bands, 2 sprigs and a gadwal.

Is there anyway that you could get a shot off with a pellet gun? I think the risk is worth the reward. Take a couple cup fulls of milo with you for the next week or so and feed them out. Chances are there may be a couple more hanging around.

was the dove killed near Hondo a local or migratory bird?....when I did some research about banded doves, one of the things mentioned was that they were recovering so few of the bands that part of the problem might be hunters killing a banded dove but band was so tiny, they may not have noticed the band...to help prevent that, they started putting a metal band on one leg and small bright plastic band on other leg hoping that would draw attention....

Yep!! Ive only killed one banded duck. A wood duck at that. Most of them get shot before they get down here!

If it was, it would be rotting in a pile with 3,000 of its friends. Im pretty sure this was a Merican dove.

Haven't seen a banded dove but I have shot a banded mallard and a green wing teal. Both came from Saskatchewan.

Hell a mourning dove in general has become fairly rare around here. Whitewings have taken over.
