I had an awesome trip fishing the other day thanks to Humminbird's Side Imaging. I wanted to make a short video briefly talking about how I used side imaging along with some screenshots to show what a school of 3-5 pound hybrids looks like on sonar! Sadly, there is such little information over what certain fish look like on side imaging. Almost all the other videos on youtube just talk about what a boulder or tree looks like which is silly and obvious lol!

Hey Clay on your combo images the hybrids look like big yellow blobs while there are thinner reddish blobs. Are you just looking for those yellow images as fish and consider the red/orange to be bait?

Most the time I consider the weaker returns (everything not white or yellow on this color pallet) to be shad, especially if they are up higher than everything else. I rely on the DI to confirm that they are tiny dots like shad as well and look for bigger hard DI dots to help indicate game fish.

The bait also shows up as blobs as you said but when the bait is thick enough it may display my hardest returns so the blob display is key to saying its shad or not usually

Use FishID to separate shad from predators.

SI is the key to chasing fish once the thermocline sets in, good screen shots.

Id love to compare chirp to nonchirp because chirp should help with target seperation to help identify each individual fish. But DI does such an awesome job at that so I use split screen most the time even though I have chirp 2D

I have noticed a bunch of reddish coloration on my Helix 9 once the water is deeper than 20ft. Looks like a bunch of red fish or grass. Is that the thermocline?

Most likely. Do you notice few to no fish deeper than that?

FishID is not helpful. FishID should be avoided. FishID is an algorithm that unit runs echo returns through. The problem with FishID is that it prevents the angler from seeing the 3 most important things on the 2D sonar screen: arch size, arch shape, and color. Let's look at gizzard shad. These shad can grow to 15 inches in length. The 2D sonar FishID can't distinguish shad from game fish. The algorithm simply puts a fish shape on the screen.

Bait fish and game fish provide very different echo returns. Bait fish even when larger in size, remain thin and have little meat or muscle to them. Therefore their arches are not well defined, they are very often displayed as a color from the softer or lower end of your color bar. The size of the arch is fairly small. As shad are a tight schooling fish, the arches may be appear as blobs.

Game fish for instance like white bass can be legal to take at 10 inches. So how does a 15 inch white bass appear on 2D sonar compared to a 15 inch shad? A 15 inch white bass has a well defined arch and the length of that arch is often about 1 inch long on the screen on units with a screen size between 9 and 12 inches. The color of the arch will often be from the upper end of the color bar and typically the arch has the densest color in the middle of the arch. This is where the white bass has the most meat, the fillets, as the case would be. While white bass also school, they are aggressive feeders and are not the food, so there is more separation on the school and therefore more visible and distinct arches are seen, even when the fish are numerous.

Successful anglers use the screen with Switchfire set to the Clear Mode in order to gain the most information about the echo returns without inhibiting their ability to see what they need to see in order to know what is bait and what is game fish.

Capt craig, could you post some pics? Also what are the thin diagonal lines? Are they sandbass feeding aggressively?

Thanks!
