I’m tired of leaving the lake with little to show for it so am in the market for a fish finder for my kayak. I’ve got a 10.5 Discovery and have loved it so far but this sonar will go on an upgraded kayak some day. I’d really like to spend less than $100 if at all possible. I need some help because I’ve been an obsessed yaker for only 6 months and have never purchased or used sonar. 90% of the fishing I do is on two deep lakes and the rest is in the Leon for whites. I’m honestly looking at sonar to find crappie and feed the wife some tacos more often. Any help from the forum would be great!

$100 limits you to something like the simplest Hummingbird PiranhaMax. You'll also spend money on a mount and a battery.

At the $100 price point I'd recommend the Lowrance Hook 3. If your not planning to buy soon I'd save a little more and wait for the black Friday deals. The Hook 3 is a great unit for the money but it's not gonna show you a lot. Basically temp and depth don't get me wrong it'll show you bait and structure just not with any detail.

You should start thinking about how and where you will mount the transducer. I thought about thru hull but as much as I toss my kayak around I didn't think it would last and I needed something I could easily take off when transporting kayak upside down.
