Going to try and keep this as short as possible

To make a long story short, got my truck back from the shop getting a new turbo and EGR delete. The tune the shop installed in the truck to keep the MIL off from the EGR is a Kory Willis PPEI EFI live 100hp tune. I wasn't aware the tune they used added 100hp until I picked the truck up.

To those of you that have a head on these trucks, what is a good switch or programmer I can put on the truck so I can turn that tune off or at least turn the power down? The trans is stock, and I'm not about to spend money to build it. I just want the truck to be reliable and tow. Problem I read, with that big of a tune, I'll fry the torque convertor towing with it.. And I tow pretty often for both work and recreation. So in turn, I want to turn the power down, or have a way to turn the truck back to stock when I'm towing. What do y'all think? Any help appreciated.

Good question, but I would be concerned why the shop added a 100hp tune without your knowledge? The most highly recommended switch is the DPS5 switch used with EFI Live. But it sounds like you would still need a tuner and another tune for stock (or closer to stock) programming. Or I may be misreading as well.

now that I've thought about it a bit more, you should get with the shop to contact PPEI/Kory Willis and re-program the tune to a more trans-safe tune and then have the shop reload it to your truck with their programmer.

Sorry no help on moding a dmax, ours are stock and see no reason to mess with it.

Like above I would go back to the shop that did the tuning and tell them I wanted a stock level tune. Everyone I know of that runs a performance tune with the stock trans ends up buying a built trans in a few thousand miles.

I'm right there with you on leaving them stock to be 100% honest. The truck needed a new turbo, so the only thing "not stock" I had them do was rip the EGR off. I'm going to stop in tomorrow and talk to them. I either want a switch/programmer where I can turn the tune off, or I want them to just take the tune out and put a stock level tune in like mentioned above. Why they put this tune in without me knowing, I have no clue. However, when I found out, I specifically asked about the tune harming the truck (the transmission more specifically) and they told me the tune is completely harmless on the truck and the trans is safe. I have a hard time believing that.

When you start modding these trucks, tunes are necessary to make adjustments to the engine parameters.

A 100hp tune on a Duramax/Allison isnt going to hurt anything. Keep your foot out of it and when you do need to get somewhere in a hurry, enjoy the hell out of it.

I just drove in a deleted F350 last night with a custom tune in it with all stock components, except for the delete pulling a car trailer. The guy pulls a 41 toyhauler with his Jeep in the back to Utah, Colorado and all over and it runs like a scalded cat. Hes not worried about it one bit.

If you have any concerns just have him de-tune it but by all means keep a little something extra on there. Its night and day difference and your components can handle it.

The manufacturer of the transmission should have a max stated amount of power that the transmission is rated for.

The tune I have in my truck was specifically designed to stay under the max of the transmission. I have 30k miles on it so far and it hasn't had any issues.

PPEI tunes come one of two generic ways : Either a Single tune or DSP5. The latter will have 5 power levels and a switch. If you have the latter they can still add the switch which You can run all the way down to 30hp. Or up to 150 smile

Ive got his tunes on my 07 Duramax and run mine either on the 60 or 100 setting for daily driving and towing. Trans is stock until it lets go with 209k on it as of today.

Yea.. a 100HP tune is nothing for a diesel. Monitor your trans temp to see if it even increases the temperature when towing.

Have done quite of bit towing since the tune, one being 8,000lbs worth of steel pipe. Trans temp was normal around 160, everything was normal and happy.
