Chuck filled me in on where the public boat ramp was on Lake McQueeney and some spots I should try last night. I launched the kayak around 6:15 this morning. I worked both banks very thoroughly. At first all I was catching was small bluegill. I was fishing with both sinking flies and a top water Llano bug. Most of the fish I was catching were on sinking flies as the bluegill couldn't get the Llano bug in their mouths. I went through several colors and sizes of both sinking flies and Llano bugs but still wasn't getting the results I wanted so I decided to switch to a popper dropper setup. That made a big difference. I started with a Llano bug / prince nymph and caught lots of bluegill, several redbreast, a couple Rios and a hybrid green sunfish. Only one fish, a Rio, was over half pound though. I then changed to a Llano bug / wacky worm setup. The fish went crazy over the wacky worm fly but most of them were just grabbing it and not getting the entire fly in their mouth. At that point I mainly caught redbreast, a green sunfish and the best fish of the day, a big Rio.

The Rio was 9.5 inches long and officially weighed 0.80 lbs. I am registering it for both the fly rod weight and C&R record. And since Chuck has neglected to break his own C&R water body record, I'll own that one for a few days too grin

You are fishing in my neck of the woods! Glad you were able to get yet another record fish. Chuck knows Mcqueeney very well! Did you fish the main lake? Also next time you fish either Mcqueeney or Dunlap use a brown sinking salamander! Rios and Redbreast love em! hooked Again yet another super job of catching some super fish! woot

Thanks everyone for the comments. I appreciate it.

Laker, I went upstream from the boat ramp. Can you post pictures of your flies? I can't find these patterns on the internet. I appreciate the tips. I'll definitely give them a try if I can figure out how to tie them on a size 8 hook.

There are several types of the Salamander Fly on line. The Visen Salamander Fly and the Anmuka Salamander Fly are the ones I use. You can order them either direct from Amuka or from Amazon. woot
