 How to catch long nose gar

I am an avid crappie fisherman but the places I normally crappie fish have been loaded with gar. What is the best way to catch these fish? I know they will occasionally hit a crappie jig. Not sure what type of live or dead bait to use or what type of set up. Thanks in advance for any tips.

I like to use cut bait, wire leader and a good stout treble hook. I will normally throw this out under a big float. Let him run a little then set the hook. Works sometimes.
Another popular rig is the rope technique. I was possiblly going to try it this weekend where I know 5ft+ spotted gar hang out in my carp hole just West of where you live.
