Sorry I didnt see this earlier. Theres actually a really simple trick for this.

Get you a household vacuum cleaner extention pipe and cut 4 slots in it at 90 degree angles. Make the slots about 1/2 inch long. Then you can stick that up in the small space and it's like a really long handle that apply equal pressure to each tab on the faucet retainer nut. Then you can get your channel locks or what ever pliers and twist away. Not that you will do that again but has saved me many busted knuckles and curse words over the years.

That's a 3" diameter pipe , must be for huge nuts !!!
