Well, the wife and I reserved a beautiful home in the mountains on Cascade Creek, just above Electra Lake, Co. Problem is, it's very near the wildfires burning just north of Durango. Even if the home is fine, I'm afraid the area will be charred and we won't have that nice Ponderosa pine scent in the air. More of a burned out forest smell, more than likely.
Looking for recommendations on other places to go in late August. We want cool, mountains, changing Aspens, clean air and a very nice, remote home to rent.

We were in the Vail , Eagle area last week for 6 days. Thats North and East of Durango area.
On 2 occasions I could see little smoke from fire in the Durango area.

Late august will be tough for changing aspen
Unless you go to Wyoming or north of there
We went over to Mesa verde on Saturday and the smoke from Durango was thick

Get you a tent and a kayak and go to North Fork Reservoir up by Mt.Aetna and Taylor mountain.

20 minutes west of Salida and then 40 minutes up the pig trail.

Take a look at Utah, lots of great areas with cool night air and sunny days. Make sure it is later in August so the "no see ums" (gnats) are past. Santa Fe is a cool place too. There are some nice lodges there. We used to love Colorado, but not anymore. Lake Powell area is good, Flagstaff Arizona area.....

Late August is early for changing aspens. Towards the end of September is peak color. We went one year in the fall to Beaver Creek. Stayed in the village right at the bottom of the ski slopes. Being off, season it was lots cheaper. Really nice. Beaver Creek was one of my favorite places to ski.

Canít help with remote rental home. Summit County is great. Winter Park and Steamboat are top notch too.

Used to go to Deckers N or Colorado Springs every late Aug/Early Sept and the Aspens around there were changing then. Thanks for the recs. We're driving so we can take our Lab. So distance is an issue for places like Utah.

I see what you mean. Last year we went up into Arkansas to Mountainview and enjoyed it there. Laid back little town, great scenery. Also have spent some time in Eureka Springs, took a guided trout fishing trip on the White River, it was nice weather too. Your dog would enjoy it!

With the prevailing south winds, I'd cross off any area within 200 miles north of there.

I'd usually recommend New Mexico, but it's been a dry summer; trees might not look as healthy.

I'd fly into Boise, Idaho and take the beautiful drive to the Sun Valley area. Lots of options for accommodations in that area.

Lake Tahoe is another good option. Fly into Reno and drive to Lake Tahoe. Plenty to do and see.

I grew up in Boise. Early September in high elevations you should start to see some good fall colors. Late September for the valley's. Sun Valley/Ketchum area is great, McCall is also very nice and a little closer to Boise. There are also a lot of hot springs around McCall and you'd be close to some good rafting either on the Payette or Salmon river if that floats your boat.

Gunnison/Crested Butte area, Lake City not too far. Two nice lakes and rivers.

Prepare for the future-it will be here tomorrow.

Wife and I enjoy Breckenridge area but we like to stay a few miles outside of town. VRBO has some decent options. We go annually and ended up driving earlier this year.

Think we may go to the hills in Arkansas, instead.

We went to Mountain View, Arkansas last September. The weather was nice & there is plenty to keep busy. We stayed at a cabin that was fairly remote on Sylamore Creek. It was dog friendly & more than enough room for the wife & I. Caught a few nice smallmouth & perch fly fishing the creek by the cabin. We went on a guided trip down the White River & wore out the Rainbow trout. Also caught a nice 25 inch Brown Trout. We went to Blanchard Springs caverns & had a good time there also. It was very relaxing & the drive was pleasant.

Chris, a high school buddy of mine owns Mount Elbert Lodge in Colorado and they were not seeing any smoke this morning, but are smelling it.
He also told me this morning that state authorities came by and told them, no bbqs, no outdoor fires and to cover the firewood stacks. I'm not sure how far NE this is from the fires, but I think going somewhere besides Co. is definitely the right call!

We have a house rented on Flathead lake in Somers Bay in late August. The lake is beautiful and it is surrounded by mountains. Glacier will still be open so a trip over the "Going to the Sun Road would be a possibility. There are tons of stuff to do in the Flathead area. One place would be the Buffalo Range in the south end of the valley. Great place to see wild life. You fly to Denver and then Denver to Kalispell. Driving from Texas is about 4 to 5 days each way.

Another place to look is Idaho. Sandpoint and Coeur d'aLane are good places to visit. Coeur d'aLane has the bike "road" that is about 70 miles called Trail of the Coeur d'aLanes.

If you are planning on changing locations I would also recommend moving your time a week or so if possible. My wife and I found that vacationing after labor day was far better. No crowds, weather a little cooler, and some Aspen changes in the higher elevations. Also recommend any area around Teluride. Inside the town is not a secluded get-a-way but there are homes available in more remote areas around it. The town itself is really a neat place to visit and the restaurants are great.

Four better check before you go. I was told today by a friend that lives in Lake City that they were going to close down all of the San Juan National forest and limit access to homes in rural areas.
He was calling me to let me know this because we usually leave about July 1 for a long stay.
You might want to check before you go.

Wonít be any aspens changing in August. Mid September to early October.
Also as far as charred mountains there are hundreds of thousands of acres that are untouched so if the forest is open it will be nice unless you are staying right in a burned area.

Gunnison, CO VRBO

Have friends and family living all along the western slope. Gunnison is one of their favorite locations for what you are wanting.
