Core aeration. The machine that actually pulls a plug from the soil. You can rent the machine at home depot. I don't have a thatch problem and aerate my yard about ever two years. I was too lazy to go rent the machine this year and paid a company to do it a few weeks ago. They charged me $125.00

Shouldn't have a problem with thatch with our warm season grasses.
Hand rake is really the best way and only way I know to effectively remove any thatch. If you have St Augustine that becomes a problem as you uproot a bunch of it.
Aeration is one of the best things you can do for the yard in the beginning of the season but it's tough on sprinklers if you don't mark them.
