I'm new to the boating world and own a 2009 1760 Lowe Roughneck.
It has a 12 Volt 45lb simple trolling motor on it that works great; but on my Christmas list, there will be a 12V trolling motor with hold the position automatically/spot lock/I pilot minn kota or motorguide equivalent.
I'm not brand conscious (I have a Lowrance at the console and a Humminbird G2 Helix 7 on the bow
What 12 Volt trolling motor would you recommend with spot lock/ I pilot or equivalent?
Thank you

Do you want electric steer or cable steer? Does having a foot control matter? Do you want manual or automatic deploy/stow? Too many variables to tell you whoch you should want.

Thanks, you are right that's lots of variables I hadn't thought of initially.
Electric steer is fine I'd like foot control in case the blue tooth doesn't work or I misplace the remote Manual deploy with rope is fine

A few more variables to consider.
1. Type of fishing you normally do. Open water, standing timber, beating the shoreline, dock shooting etc... 2. Price range. 3. Deck space. (The main reason I went with the Motorguide XI5 over the MinnKota Ultrex. I have very little open deck space at the bow. Getting rid of the large foot pedal was a blessing) 4. Do you want to link it to your sonar unit. . . .

1. I like deep water fishing the best 2. The cheaper the better (within reason) Ideally, less that $1500 3. I do like deck space, so saving deck space is always nice 4. Not critical. If I can link the Humminbird Helix 7 gen 2 to it, that would be a plus.
I fish a lot of lakes that are uncharted (small lakes). I actually do my own mapping of them with a Reefmaster program. So I'm primarily looking for a spot lock or equivalent technology. It would be nice to have a follow the trail or follow the contour option, but not necessary--just spot lock (or equivalent) and I'd be happy.

Sounds like you need the Bluetooth Terrova. electric steer but has a foot control that comes with about 15 of cable and can be unplugged and stored for emergencies. Sounds like you want the Link version so it can be conndcted to your humminbird. If follow a contour isnt a need then you could do the non link version and save some money. Dont buy a used older model because the spotlock isnt as accurate as the new model.

The MinnKota Terrova would be a good fit as would the MotorGuide XI5. If you want to connect to your sonar units, then the brand is a limiting factor. MinnKota connects to Humminbird and MotorGuide connects to Lowrance. Linking up either motor to your Sonar unit for the added features jumps the price pretty significantly, so you need to decide if that's something you want/need. If you went with the MotorGuide option and wanted to use it's built in transducer, then you need to account for the cost of an adapter cable to connect to your Humminbird when you start comparing prices. Another thing to consider is whether you want to stick with a +12V model or bump up to a +24V model. The max. thrust from either brand on the +12V model's is 54lbs. Also when comparing features/prices between the two check for any rebate offers which may be going on.

Thanks for the great advice
For now, I am drawing the line at 12 volts. Trying to keep things simple
Ive heard those built in transducers can make mounting a side scan ducer on the trolling motor a pia, so again, probably just simple spot lock or other brand equivalent

If you're going to stick with 12v then look at the Xi3, that's the version of Motorguide that is 12v. The worst thing about it AND the Xi5 is how it deploys and stows. That makes it difficult to mount any external transducers. I have an Xi5 and LOVE it, with the exception of how it deploys! MG definitely needs to get on the ball and develop a tm that does why the Xi3 and 5 do with a better deployment method like MK did with the Ultrex!!!

I have a boat that is the same dimension as yours. I have the riptide terrova 12v 55lbs link. I love it. I fish fresh and salt, pretty much every species I can catch. This thing is a game changer.
