The folks at Lake Lewisville put on a white bass tournament Saturday May 26, and my friend Ed D and I decided to participate. I thought I’d give TFFers a blow by blow account of our efforts. So here goes. Of course, we set out to win the tournament, but we came in 3rd – a plaque but out of the money.

We started by deciding to pre-fish the lake a couple of times since neither of us had ever fished it. So, Ed and I went up on May 8. We were limited as to where we could look due to high winds, and ended up finding a couple of places out on the hump north of Lewisville Park and a small hump west of there toward the marina. We caught over 100 sandies, and the biggest was 14.5 inches long.

I went back on May 22 and got to check several more spots because the wind was light. I verified the 2 previous spots by finding and catching a few at each spot. Then I found fish over by the dam near the facility jutting out from the dam and surrounded by buoys. I caught some hybrids there and 3 or 4 fifteen-inch sandies. The next place where I found fish was on the needle that juts down from the north and west side where the shoreline turns to the north. I could have caught fish there all day, but the fish were all about 13 inches long.

Next I went out to the gravel pits and, after checking several of the small humps, I found fish on one that had a 26 fow high spot. Caught a 27.5 inch hybrid there and 3 or 4 fifteen inch sandiess and smaller ones. Then I worked my way north checking structures along the west side. I didn’t find anything until I got to the spillway area. There I found a long skinny structure about 100 yards long that was either an old dam, berm or roadbed. Water on both sides was 35 fow and it was 20 fow on top of it. Shortly after I started down it I saw numbers of fish on the graph on top and on the sides of the, lets’s say, roadbed. I set up there and started catching big sandies . Most were 15 to 15.5 inches and one went 16 inches. This was the spot I had been looking for and where I would go to fish the tournament.

So. we went straight there on Saturday and spent the whole time fishing up and down that roadbed. We caught 110 sandies, but the vast majority were 13 inches, not the 15 inchers I had found the previous Tuesday. We kept hoping the big ones would come in, and we did manage to put 5 fifteen inch fish in the boat. The other 5 we submitted for the tournament were 14 to 14.5 inches. We ended up with 13.1 lb and the winning weight was 14.5 lb for 10 fish. I think that if we had been able to get one or two 16 inch fish and the rest 15 inch fish, we would have at least come in 2nd.

We also caught a couple of legal hybrids at the roadbed and had another pull off. Add 5 drum and we had 117 fish for the morning.

We heard the fellow who came in 1st say he caught his fish near 5 fow west of the toll bridge, which is considerably farther north and west of the last place I checked. So, the advantage goes to the locals, who know the lake well. The trick to winning was knowing where the big fish were.

Fishing on an unknown lake and using established skills is still a winner. All fish caught on Mepps, # 4 ??

Re 27.5 inch hybrid: I got a pic but it doesn't do it justice. It was very heavy. It didn't occur to me that it could be a record since at Cedar Creek the record is 28 inches long. Here's the pic:

27.5” is a Giant for Lewisville. Sunday morning I had a client catch one exactly that size. On the scale it went 9.54. It had a bunch of eggs also. I’ve seen photos of a couple 12’s caught about 5-6 years ago but since then nothing this large. The biggest one I’ve laid eyes on was below the Ray Roberts damn. I saw a guy carrying it out in a bucket and asked him to show it off. My guess is that it was a 11-12.

It was nice meeting you Dennis, I will say that this is the first year that i have solely focused my fishing in Lewisville since we are building a house about 2 minutes from the lake. Now i will say that my Dad and i fished on Friday and found the spot where we caught them on Saturday so i would say that it helped being out there the day before. Anyhow it was enjoyable meeting all of you guys that we talk to on here.
