We got an early start, headed to some of our favorite spots but didn't have much luck. The water is high and super clear. Plenty of vegetation. Good breeze. We caught three dinks and moved to a mid lake cove. After fishing for a few minutes, the water behind us exploded with schooling bass. We have been fishing Bastrop for 11 years, so schooling did not come as a surprise. Still, it seemed a little early. It was the usual stuff; 15 minutes of boredom, followed by 2 minutes of craziness. We fished until 12:30 when the wind eased up and the schooling seemed to die. My Wife informed me it was time to go; she was hot. Nothing spectacular but we managed 19 fish. One of those days when I am glad they were schooling because we didn't have any real luck fishing our usual square bills.

We went to The Roadhouse and had some great hamburgers!

RELEASE THE SCHOOLIE FLOTILLA!

Bastrop gets to be boring, yes its fun getting bites but dang 1 to 2 lbers is about all there is. Ive had 90+ fish days there but Ive never caught anything over 3.5 lbs. Anyways, good lake to try and gain confidence on a certain lure.

Your right, Bastrop is a great numbers lake and not much on big fish. It helps to go there, catch a bunch of fish and feel good about yourself. The biggest fish I have ever caught there is a little over 6 pounds on a frog. The number of fish I have caught on any kind of top water, I can count on one hand, too.

My best quality fish on this lake have been caught on top water baits. It's a fun lake just for the numbers if nothing else. What you might do is take an ultra light set up and catch these smaller fish with it so you can get a good battle out of it. I do this on Fayette and it's fun. And when I hook up with a three pound bass it's even more fun.

I swear I do not know how you do it fishytx. I know you catch fish on FCL and now Bastrop. I just cannot seem to get any action on any top waters there. Good for you!

Bastrop has some of the best top water action due to all of the grass. The only reason I do not fish Bastrop that often is because of the road I have to take to get there. I have come so close to others hitting my boat trailer on that road that just isn't worth the risk any more. People fly down 21 and it has so many curves with the speed limit at 70 mph. About every two miles there are signs about guard rail damage ahead. People run off the road there a lot.
Top water baits are just like all other artificial baits, you have to find what they want. The bait I can not fish but try a lot is a crank bait. I would really like to learn a lot more about these because they catch big bass. I throw several every time I go out, so it's not like I'm not trying to learn the secret about these things. I bounce them off timber, the bottom and all that good stuff. The only thing I haven't tried is to use a slower retrieve reel and that could be the ticket.

Taking my kids(7 & 10 years old) camping here in two weeks.
I have never been to the lake.
Any lake help or tips on getting them bit on basic chunk and wind techniques?
They are basic Zebco 33 kind of fisherman.
