Hi guys,

I’m planning to buy and installing something on the boat to have thebattery charging while fishing offshore. What are tou guys using to keep tour battery charge up? Im normally be out there for 8-10 hours fishing and have the radio running and would hate for the battery to go dead. Is there some source of charger made for that . Im currently running 2 battery on my boat. Thanks guys.

Tran

A lot of the more experienced guys that run offshore will keep their motors running the entire time, they explained it to me and then it made a lot sense thumb

So i guess that by leaving the motor will not get the motor hot or causing problem for 8-10 hrs? If not then i will just keep the motor running .

You have to check the specs on any alternator charger you buy with the output specs for your specific motor. What I ran into with a MinnKota charger was it takes 25A output from the motor to trigger it into charge mode and my Etec only puts out 25A and that isn't until a specific RPM is reached. All the time I thought I was keeping my batteries topped off it wasn't doing zip. I'm not saying that all combinations are like that, but you have to do your homework.

I have fished offshore a few times.
Usually its windy and sunny so maybe a wind / solar charging system.

The onboard charge on the run are probably not going to do what you're wanting to do. I would consider a small generator as mentioned above -- else a separate house battery to run the radio and use in an emergency.
