Got to fish two of my three days off this week. Fished Wednesday and Friday. On Wednesday myself and good friend Jeff took the kayaks to Lake Travis. Beautiful lake. We fished from 8am till 3pm and caught a bunch of nice Bluegill in the 8 to 10 inch range. Fish were located in coves 12 to 16 feet of water. Fish were close to docks and stacked on ledges. Jeff was using live worms and I was using a small crank bait, Chartreuse/Black in color. Caught over 50 and kept some for the dinner table. On Friday I took the fly rod to Cypress Creek in Hays County. I fished some property that a friend of mine was working at and he got permission from the owner for me to fish. I fished from 9am till 2pm. The creek is in good condition. Water is crystal clear with nice grass beds and some deep pockets. Fish were hitting a top water Orange/Red Lady Bug Popper from 9am till about 10:30am. I then had to switch to sinking flies. Brown Grasshopper and a Yellow Craw fish got the best results. Fish were found in 3 to 6 feet of water holding by grass beds. Caught a nice variety of Bluegill,Longear, and Redbreast. A couple of small bass rounded out the catch. Side Note: A friend of mine who lives on Mcqueeney stated that the boat traffic was heavy today on both Dunlap and Mcqueeney. Looks like the summer wake and ski boaters are here.

Nice report Curtis. Love fishing Travis and the Cypress Creek. Hopefully I get the chance to fish both places this year! Side Note: Yes Sir you are right about the boat traffic picking up on the river lakes. From now until after Labor Day early morning fishing will be the plan. After 10am it will be one wake boat after another!
IGFA World Record Rio Grande Cichlid. Lake Dunlap. John 3:16 Sinner's Prayer. God forgive me a sinner. I accept Jesus Christ as my Savior !

Another excellent report. I really enjoy reading them and appreciate the details.
How do you go about locating fish in 12 to 16 feet of water? Since all I fish with is the fly rod I don't ever go searching for them at that depth, but need to break out the sink tip and try to learn.

Very handy when I am fishing with my spinning gear. When I fish on the fly it's just trying to place a fly where ever I think a fish will be!

Laker...Good report as usual...thanks. I have never been to Lake Travis before & have a few questions. Where do you launch & do they have a decent boat ramp there ? I have always heard there is a excellent bluegill population there & was wondering why it would be so much better than canyon lake ? More fertile water ? More vegetation ? ...ETC. and last I would think there would be heavy ski boat traffic ? Is it just so big that you can find spots away from all that ? Thanks in advance...

There are a lot of public boat ramps on Travis. I used The Cypress Creek Park ramp. The park opens at 7am and closes at 6p. Friend of mine who bass fishes Travis a lot puts in at the Sail&Ski Yacht Club in Lake Way. Travis is a HUGE lake with lots of out of the way places to fish. It is also a very deep lake. You can get into 30 to 40 feet of water very fast! The lake has plenty of bottom structure such as large boulders and ledges. There are also some grass beds. Travis has a very good Bluegill Population. Plenty of BIG Copper Nose!
