First time posting but read forum routinely. Just had a question about pegging soft plastics. I know it's according to who you talk to last but what seems to be the popular thought on this issue. Ive done both and had success with both but know there must be some real knowledgeable folks on this forum. Thoughts or ideas?

I use a rubber bobber stop and peg if I will be fishing in really thick brush. Keeping the weight against the worm helps minimize hangups.

I like the round head peggetts with the line slit in the flat head. This allows the line knot to line up properly for the weight to set straight. In heavy cover this allows the weight to pull up against cover and slide over much easier. The feel this gives you is just a little different than a fish loading up on the plastic. It seems to me that the bobber stopper in front of the weight tends to grab the cover when it comes into contact with it. I will stretch the pegget just a bit before cutting it off so it recesses back into the nose of the weight. This allows for less friction at the nose of the weight. Coming in contact with cover amounts to more hood sets for me without a ball of rubber catching on limbs and etc.. I fish for the resistance and not a tight line strike. Each pitch is on slack line; then picking up the slack to feel for resistance and setting the hook if there is any indication of pressure of a fish.

Each person you work with holds some promise to your future success.

I use black rubber bands found in the hair care section at Walmart.

Insert both ends of a 6 piece of mono in the bottom, put the rubber band in the loop, and pull to the top. Clip any extra sticking out the top like Donald was talking about and the little bit left in the bottom bell cushions the knot.

90% of the time I peg my soft plastics. I might move the peg up the line certain distances if I have something that i want to come up off the bottom a tad. Such as a floating bait that resembles a bluegill in a way, that you can throw over a bed and then drag it over, then let the bait float up and then pull it back down so that way it tricks the guarding bass into thinking something is after the eggs.

+2 on the bobber stoppers.

That way, when you get to open water, you can slide the bobber stops up the line to free the weight.

For T-rigged worms and craws, I like to peg the bullet weight with a bobber stopper. For smaller finesse baits, I use an Owner shaky type jig head.

In memory of my childhood friend Dan Sterling, who taught me at an early age how to catch bream with a hand-line, and who unknowingly hooked me on fishing for life.

I only peg when fishing thick brush etc., to minimize snags. The sliding sinker makes it harder for a fish to get leverage when he shakes his head or jumps when trying to throw the hook.

I don't peg at all. I feel like it causes poor hookups on occasion. Or at least that's what I blame it on.
