I've got a good buddy fishing the Sturgeon Bay open this weekend on Friday/Saturday. Saturday will be my last chance to fish up there during the peak for Smallmouth this year. Obviously, I'd stay out of his way, but is it poor taste to fish a lake at the same time you know your buddy is fishing in a fairly high dollar tournament?

I help sponsor a high school team but didnt have kids in my boat so Id fish the lakes and stay away from where I knew our kids would be. If any of them happened to roll in where I was Id just let them have the water and move along and wish them luck. Same general principal I would think.

Can you just fish the tournament with him?

I don't tournament fish. He has a regular partner who is already signed up with him anyway.

If you were a really good friend, you would figure out where he's fishing, then go buzzing around the lake everywhere else.

in this case i think you're ok, its not like you are going to a 2,900 acre reservoir and setting up on the big community hole down by the dam. you could probably fit a few toledo bends within the tournament boundaries of this T.

I'm leaning towards not going. The area is big, but it fishes smaller than you'd think particularly given how cold it's been this year. There really aren't "spots" up there, as the fish move with the wind/warm water. He's the one who showed me the ropes fishing up there, so essentially every area that I do know I learned from him. Dicey one for sure, but if I put the shoe on the other foot I think I'd probably prefer me not to fish.

Just go to spots that he's never taken you to and wet a line.....you may learn something that you can share with him.

Have you asked his opinion? If it was me, I'd be interested in going and seeing if I could find some new areas on my own. Sounds like he gave you the lay of the land (uh lake), now run with it and do your own thing.

totally agree. I also think you are overestimating your ability to effect the others in the tourney!!! Haha. .....but don't we all? Unless you are in very close proximity to the tourney anglers, you will not make a nickels difference in any of their payouts.

Just go fish.

I would go fishing but stay completely away from any spots he has shown you. Like Tom said, you may find a wad of fish somewhere you have never been and that would be a bonus for you & him!
