 How to measure/know the right shaft length for a trolling motor?

So I'm considering buying a new trolling motor. In order to measure the current one for size, where do you measure from?
Top of head to bottom of motor?
Middle of head to middle of motor?
Bottom of head to top of motor?
Or, some other spots I'm not thinking of?

Mainly you want to be able to have the motor at least 1.5 ft in the water. If you fish big lakes with big winds consider adding another foot or so.

They go by the length of the shaft and are usually 45, 52 or 60". So measure the length of the shaft excluding the head and motor. 
I am a Senager. (Senior teenager) I have everything that I wanted as a teenager, only 50 years later. I get an allowance every month. I have PU truck and a bass boat, I am blessed.

Measure from 2 feet below the waterline to the bow surface, the add another foot or so. Then take the next size up. Longer is better, as long as the overhang still fits within the boat. Having a longer shaft than needed allows you to have flexibility, especially in rough waters.
I called the mfg of my boat and asked them.

If you are considering an Ultrex or any other TM that has Spot Lock, you may want to think about this.
In my buddies boat with Ultrex, some times he sets the spot lock, the nose naturally turns into the wind. We both stand on the back deck throwing at the target. That lifts the nose quite a bit. So consider that.
