Unless it is a 1 piece rod then I think someone is trying to make extra cash on shipping. I have personally bought 2 piece 12 footers off ebay and had them shipping from South Carolina to DFW for 30 bucks a rod. If it is a 1 piece you might have to go get it or find a big rig driver who is coming from that area to this area and kick em some cash. Honesty I was surprised when I received my 6' packages in decent shape.

A five spot for a shot and a beer? And you wonder how we wound up here.

How long is the longest section when it's broken down?

That's way over priced for shipping. Tell him to find a PVC pipe that will fit both sections together... So 1 pvc pipe about 8'6". Put bubble wrap around the tip, and around the but. Then put pvc caps and tape them on. Schedule 20 pipe if he can find one with big enough diameter (is the rod spin cast or casting ( as this will determine the diameter)

He should be able to ship it UPS ground for between 20 -40 at most. I receive rods all the time from Lews and Custom rod builders and have shipped a couple.. it's all weight and legnth. Keep it as light as possible while protecting the rod from breaking.. mark it fragile but as long as it's in the PVC pipe it should be fine.

hope that helps.

if it's two pc and under 8' shipping won't be too bad, but over 8' it get ridiculous.
