The picture explains everything I think... my passenger was standing on the front deck of the boat as we pulled up to the dock, and as he left the boat, it rose up and the skeg hit an overhanging part of the dock and cracked off. I put a magnet to it and it did not stick, so not metal. Anyone know what this is made of and if it can be fixed?

What is the impact of operating it without, is it just to protect the prop in shallow water? Or does it have another purpose?
Thanks for any feedback in advance.

I think they are made of aluminum or may be a cast aluminum. Never seen one busted on a trolling motor but I know they can be repaired on the big motor. The motor should still operate but leaves the prop open to a nasty hit from rock or stump.

Housing is aluminum. Magnet will not stick to aluminum or SS. Never tried on brass but guess it is a no go too. Skeg is primarily for steering control. Probably no effect on slow speeds but you will notice on high. It acts like a rudder. You ought to try driving a big motor with no skeg. Ever since my dad jumped out of my months old Ranger and the dock chipped the gel coat on the nose I warn people to be careful when getting in and out.

Well that is the lesson learned throughout all of this for sure... Just hoping there is a solution to fix it. Sounds like I need to take it somewhere to get it welded... also wondering if that would need to be taken apart because of the heat during welding?
