I setup a 20 gallon long aquarium on the bar next to my kitchen and caught these in a local lake. based on markings I think they are bluegill. What do you guys think?

They have been in the tank (live plants) for about a week now and just about 3 days ago they started getting interested in the flake food. I plan on adding some more scenery soon and giving them bloodworms and/or brine shru

very cool but I'm guessing green sunfish, hard to tell without better pics. We had one that lasted about 6 months but finally croaked (think we should have done more water changes). Was fun to put small minnows in there and watch the carnage!

Looks nice but you're gonna need a bigger tank . wink

Save yourself some money (on the brine shrimp / bloodworms) and buy or dig some worms . They also like crickets , small grasshoppers , etc.

I've seen some pretty large bluegill approaching a pound in size. I wonder if these will grow that big.

Did the same a few times when I was in college. They readily at flake food and it really seemed to bring out their bright colors.

Exactly. I will have to take some newer pics, these guys are starting to show some vertical stripes!

Funny thing, when they see me come in from work or exit my bedroom in the morning when I wake up, they gather near the surface in the corner where I drop the flakes.

Welcome to my addiction I mean hobby. First order of business, start looking for a bigger tank, CL, Local fish store, Petsmart ect, all are good places to find a good deal. Sunfish are predators, they grow fast, need a varied high protein diet, and lots of water changes. I have three threads that will be of some interest to anyone thinking about a North American Native Aquarium. I haven't posted on them in a while but will be putting up some updated pictures of the 175 and 225, and as the weather warms up, I'll start collecting minnows again. Appreciate the kind words Westside and Dan. Below are links to my threads.
