I was told today that I must have my trailer weight to register it. I have a NC title but it does not list the weight by itself. It has the GVWR and the load capacity. The clerk told me I have to have it weighed and show him the slip. It is a manufactured Stratos trailer with a label and a VIN. I tried to explain to him that the boat was on the trailer so getting the trailer weighed by itself is not going to be an easy task. He replied, "Rules are rules." Has anyone else had this issue on a manufactured trailer? Is there an easier way to do this?

I'm afraid you will have to get the empty weight. I never weighed my trailer, but I just looked at the registration papers and it does show an empty weight.

More than likely just give them a number and it will satisfy them. if they need a weight slip I don't know then.

If they go by weight for the cost of registration that could make it expensive. A 7000# trailer is a heavy hauler and might be a lot to tag. I had a jet ski once and they made a mistake on the title and instead of showing it 7.6 feet long they put 76 feet long. When they told me it cost $450 to register I flipped and then they saw the mistake.

his vin tag shows 7040 gvwr it is the same fee from 3500-6000 and from 6k-10k . it should run 55.00 for tag, 6.25% on sales tax , 10.00 road and bridge, 33.00 title fee .

I weighed mine with the boat on it. When I got to the county office the clerk backed off the boat, motor, and gear. She started by asking how much the boat weighs. Just show the weight slip and right in the boat, motor and gear weight to subtract. My complaint was I asked the clerk twice if I needed to weigh it and she said no. I passed right by a weigh station on the way home the next day from fishing. It would have been nothing to pull in and weigh it. I get home unhook and go to town to register. Another clerk looked at the one that I talked to the previous day and says they need weight. I Rockwall county they will give you a checklist. On mine they only checked inspection. Inspection is required on all out of state transfers whether you will need an annual one or not. If they give you a checklist make sure you take it back. Not sure about other counties but Rockwall will ask for it. It really sucks that government workers have to cop an attitude but I guess it goes with the job. Also I am sure they deal with some real winners.

That sticker seems really strange to me. With all my trailers the GVWR - the weight capacity is the trailer weight. Yours calculates out way too heavy (3115lbs!) or it is one hell of a beefy boat trailer? noidea

It seems you will never get to the GVWR with the listed weight capacity. Potentially over paying taxes/fees. I must be missing something?

GVWR is the maximum legal weight of the trailer AND the load.

The actual weight doesn't matter. it's the weight rating. If the GVWR for the trailer is more than 4500 lbs, ie. 4501 or more, it has to be inspected and requires brakes. I went through this whole process because the surge brakes on my trailer were so badly corroded I just took them off. then the state tried to say it was required and i couldn't register it until it passed inspection. My GVWR is 4500 so it does not require the inspection.

I think the weight rating for inspections has been increased to 7500. I only had to get mine inspected because it is required in order to register any trailer or vehicle transferring from out of state regardless of whether or not the origin state has inspections. All the dude did when had mine in inspected was look at the ligts to make sure they were all there and not broken. He then looked at the mfg. tag and recorded serial number and the weight ratings from it. Never checked brakes or even asked about them. I figured he would at least check the level of the brake fluid.

I went to a different location yesterday hoping to get better results. Nope. According to the clerk I must have the trailer inspected too. She also stated that I must have the weight of the trailer alone without the boat recorded on the official weigh slip. So I am going to get the trailer inspected with the boat on it next. Then I will have to find/hire someone to watch the boat for me at a marina while I go get the trailer weighed. I hope getting the boat registered will be a little easier.
