I have a newly installed Minnkota 3 bank onboard charging system.
I fish usually 1 or 2 days a week.
Batteries never get worn out....should I keep the unit plugged in all the time or only the night before a trip.
Learning as I go folks.

The “smart chargers” (automatic) will stop charging when batteries are full. They will keep them topped off when they need it. Plug them in when you get back and unplug them when you go.

Night before is what I do.
Some how something went wrong with the pro series I used to have and before the one channel failed it killed my Electronic control module.

If it's a new Minn Kota, then you are able to leave it plugged in 24/7. As said above, it will cut off when the batteries are fully charged, then it will periodically "test" the batteries to see if they've drawn down. If so, it will charge it until full again then repeat.

I would say the battery type and brand should also be taken into consideration. I’m running AGM batteries by Odyssey and it’s reccommended that they are charged with a high end charger and stay plugged in. However, I had issues keeping the batteries on the charger when I use to run wet batteries. Every setup is different so you have to find the best way of charging for your particular setup.

yes leave it plugged in

if you have wet batteries check the water level in them every few months, top off with distilled water

I've got a Dual Pro three bank charger and always plug it up immediately when I get home...I left it plugged up for several years with no problems but my boat sits under an open carport with several big pine trees nearby...the thought occurred to me that if lightning hits one of those trees,it could easily jump over and fry everything in my boat so I started unhooking my charger, usually the morning after I get back home and I plug it back in again periodically to make sure batteries stay topped off...
