I need some help. I bought my first boat about a year and a half ago. Its a 2003 Crestliner Sportfish 1850 with a 150 ho Yamaha HPDI outboard. I bought this boat primarily because Id heard that the Yamaha was the most reliable outboard built and I cant fix anything. Well, this one has been a nightmare. Its nearly impossible to keep water from getting into the fuel system. Ive gone to non-ethanol gas exclusively, even though its a pain to get, and expensive. I use some Yamaha fuel additive that was highly recommended. Still, I have trouble with it. My main question is does anyone know a place/tech that youd recommend for this problem. The boat is on Twak. Ive taken it to a couple of places around there but am now willing to deliver it anywhere if I can get this problem solved. Thanks in advance for any recs.

E free gas is better, if tanks aren't full they can sweat with the big fluctuation in temps like here lately. The best thing to do is go to Academy and get the water separator filter kit and install it yourself.

Gas fill at the splashwell? Have seen the seal on the gas fill allow water to enter. If that cap is loose when closed, it`s not sealing.

Water in gas is not something a mechanic can eliminate. You have to do that. Once its in fuel system then yes, it takes a knowledgable mechanic to "FIX" it, but you have to do your part. As Gary advises, the fuel/ water seperator filter is a MUST have & change it as needed. As needed doesnt mean once a year or at set intervals. One tank of bad gas can do the deed. Rockwall Marine is top notch too, thats why they are so busy.

Thanks for all the recommendations and tips. Rockwall Marine must be good. They cant look at my boat until June 11. There are a couple of places that were highly recommended closer to Twak (Burtons and Service Marine) and they were both almost as far out. I guess this is normal? It seems crazy to me that there arent more guys who can fix boats. You know, because everyone knows that boats break. I figure I can los it myself before then.

Gas fill and the fuel tank vent are the only places water can get into your fuel. Also, I can't see why anyone would hit the water without a separator filter installed. It's cheap insurance.
You should also be careful where you buy fuel. I only buy at places that sell a lot of it so it's usually always fresh gas. Joe's gas station on the corner is usually not a good choice.
