Is it Normal to run other accessories ie. bilg pump, Live well,Nav lights & inst panel off your Cranking Batt in a bass boat? The reason I ask is ..I have a three batt system and it seem every thing except the troll motor in connected to the cranking Battery and my last couple trips out I had to limp back in on my troll motor even after I had my Electronics (Lowrance HDS Units) on standby!I turn the ignition key and hear that dreaded sound.

Yes most run everything off the cranker, you need a bigger battery.

Yes most run everything off the cranker, you need a bigger battery. I was thinking along those lines. About the Battery do you have any recomendations? Currently I`m using an Acadamy Exide Stowaway Starting Battery 24MSXXST 1000 Cranking amps,115 Minutes Reserve Capacity.

First: you dont list which big motor you have. IF its an alternator style charging system the AGM style battery is fine Academy sells the Exide Megacycle AGM200.,Group 31. 1110 Marine cranking Amps & 200 Reseve Minutes. Take your old one in for the $20 core.
Second: IF you have an older motor with a STATOR/TRIGGER/VOLTAGE REGULATORS style charge system you HAVE to run a wet cell lead acid type battery or RISK frying out the charging system/wiring. Dont ask. For wet cell LeadAcid heavy duty cranking battery i use O'Reillys Super Start part #31-5T. Its built for high vibration/shock applications in equipment/Trucks in rough terrain conditions. Extra bracing in plates & never failed me. Same for core charge.

It`s an older Merc Blk Max 150 motor & I believe it has a ststor & rectifier instead of an Alt.Is this type battery safe for Marine applications i`m considering looking into one?

DEFINATELY want to run a wet cell lead acid battery then.. LOL. I thought I'd just upgrade to ALL AGM's. Wrong. 2 voltage regulators($162 each) & burnt bullet connectors. I started researching. BBC Don Weed at European Marine explained it. I installed new AGM's & first trip out i noticed volt meter was a little high. Around 15 V. Didn't think much of it. Next trip showing 17V . Knew something was going on. Got home & pulled cowling off. Put muffs on, checked with voltmeter. Yup 17.8V. Noticed blackened bullet connectors, pulled regulators. Sure enough , potting was meltig & coming out. Sent Don a PM & immediate response back explaining its HOW the batteries TAKE the charge. AGM will take all charge thrown at it. Leas acid can only take so much at a time(basic terminology for dummies like me) an alternator wont overcharge (no heat buildup). A Stator will continue to put out higher & higher voltage when regulators fail due to heat produced. He said they may last a while with AGM, BUT, they WILL fail ! Sime actually set wiring on fire. He said I was lucky. He's seen a LOT of burnt up older Stator style motors due to wrong battery type for older motors. PS: Parts Plus ALSO carries a good choice Group 31 battery that is good in our boats. Its the Super Start Fleet& Heavy . Its got 175Reserve & i think 950 Cranking amps which those motors need to crank while running all the accessories simultaneously. I just sold my 94 Merc & running a 250SHO now so Ill be able to do ALL AGM's now.

Dang, shouldnt take much to fire off that older engine. I figured you had a Pro XS because they require bigger batteries, that 24 is kind of small still though.
Keep in mind that marine cranking amps and cold cranking amps are different.

Yes sir, they do pull the juice! When I first upgraded graphs, mine would turn off when I started the big motor. I thought it was the battery, but it ended up being subpar wiring instead.

Yes most run everything off the cranker, you need a bigger battery. Would`nt A larger Deep cycle dual Purpose battery work for this application since most everything else except the troll mtr runs off the cranker?
