I may try to make the change to a high chair type kayak some day. I've tried a few out over the years. Yes its nice staying dry, but my biggest concern is those seats even in the low position are not conducive to paddling in high winds and rough conditions we have every spring. For those of you that have tried them all, who makes the very lowest low seating position for high chairs?

I would just recommend you the mariner Sails demo day on May 19th and check them out for yourself. You will avoid a lot of biased opinions that way.

That's probably the AirPro Max seat but I second what Cody said. That will be a big demo day with a lot of models and brands to try.

I went to a Demo Day on Grapevine 4 or 5 years ago. Looked like all the Dallas area shops were there. Tried out a few that I thought might work but conditions that day convinced me otherwise. Wished someone would build a kayak where chair would sit below the water line if you needed it to.

AirPro Max seat on the Radar 135 has been good to me so far. I mostly use it in the low position.

In bad weather do you ever wish your center of gravity was lower? roflmao

Funny about seats. I took my S-15 canoe out evening before last and on a whim, I carried along this little lawn chair with bladed feet I used to use in it. I can put the back blade of the chair "feet" between the midships seat and a thwart bar just behind it, the front blade over the top of the bench seat. It weighs, well, you can lift this thing with a pinkie finger.

So, there was no wind, I took a phone call from a friend that lasted about 15 minutes and just sat there like I was in a lounge chair. The chair's webbing is very comfortable, the high back, the seat height. I can literally stand up if I chose to, reach back and fold it up and toss it behind me in the canoe. Then, in high winds, I could paddle home sitting low on the bench seat or "canoe style" down in the belly.

Now, if I had experienced a strong southerly gust of wind all of a sudden, between being high sitting in the seat and being in my aluminum canoe, I'd be writing this from somewhere in . . . Oklahoma. Ha!

One interesting vessel to me would be the Native Ultimate FX Propel 13 with a seat that leaves a seated kayaker's legs bent at about 90 degrees for very easy standing, a vessel that could be pedaled and is also shaped good for paddling, too, and that has the angler sitting deep in the water. Since it has no "bilge" area (just a single HDPE skin), if you look at folks standing and fishing from these kayaks, they look like their legs are really short. They are, in effect standing in a position where their feet are under the water line.

Brad

I wish someone would make a skinny kayak where part of the gunnel on both sides swung over and below the water line to form stirrups for standing up. Best of both worlds to me. banana

Have you thought about a Wilderness Commander? you can sit very low in the seat. And also have the choose to hop up in the top seat area to be higher.

And he saith unto them, Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.

I was in some pretty heavy wind last weekend and it wasn't bad. I never felt unstable. Just getting blown around on the lake a little bit. bolt
