Where do the weigh in fish go when released? Surely they don't travel all the way back across the lake to what would have been there home.

There have been several studies on this and they have always shown varying results but there has been direct proof of some fish swimming all the way back to where they were caught.

ive heard that theyve done tests before with trackers in the fish and more times than not they end up back in the same general area that they were caught. there was one big fish that was an unofficial world record because it was foul hooked that they caught really close to the same place they caught it a few years before and released it at the ramp both times if i remember correctly. im sure someone here has a lot more information on this than me, this is just stuff i remember off the top of my head who_knows

That is amazing! I would have never guessed.

From John Hope: http://www.insideline.net/features/2016/10/31/tracking-trophy-bass-with-john-hope
Tracking Trophies after Tournaments

I think we are all curious about what happens to fish released at tournament sites and I knew John had the same curiosity. There have been some studies done that are larger than Johns sampling, some of which Todd Driscoll of the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department references in his article Movement of Largemouth Bass Following Tournament Release. There he writes that the TPWD estimates as many as 31,000 fish were displaced to a weigh in site at Sam Rayburn over the study period (almost 5% of the entire 14 plus fish in Rayburn) and they estimate that up to 40% of released fish return to their capture site. John tracked several and his summary is that most fish, if not overly stressed by capture and handling, will migrate back to the area where they were originally caught and that many do it very, very quickly.

We tracked a fish that was caught across from Jackson Hill Marina and released at Twin Dykes (about 18 miles apart). That fish was released late in the afternoon and we found her the next day back where she was caught. That was the quickest return we found. The longest was a fish that was transported 27 miles and found its way home within a week.

Yep. Some stay close, some relocate to suitable habitat nearby, some swim for miles right back to where they were caught. Pretty neat research done on this.

My personal theory is the bigger the bass the higher the probability they return to their home range. Bass get big because they found a niche in an area that they were able to exploit. That's not an advantage they'll easily give up. Just because a big bass was successful in one area, does not mean they will be successful in another. I'm aware of some pretty solid evidence of big bass getting relocated to new lakes and dying shortly there after even though they were unharmed during the catch or release. I believe they just couldn't adapt to a new area.

Smaller fish haven't had as much time to fall into a routine or grow large enough to lay claim to certain boardwalk real estate, as such I think there is a better chance they wind up calling some other place home. 2cents

I caught a tagged fish two years in a row on the TN. River in a tournament. Sent in the information off the tag and received a letter back on the history of the fish. Three times she had been caught and released at the boat ramp. All three times she was caught 5 miles from there behind a old Railroad trestle and returned each time to her home.
1 mile- Out of the boat ramp cove.
1 mile- Up the Tenn. River against the current.
2 miles- Across the River, across a huge flat, through a channel, to the back of a large cove to the Railroad.
1 mile- Under the Railroad trestle and to the back of that cove.

Absolutely amazing that this 3.5 pound fish could make all those turns and return home; not once but 3 times. She had only gained 2 pounds over the 3 year period. Lean and mean with a built in GPS.

Might have been a 5 lb'er if if wouldn't have had to swim those extra 15 miles bolt

They travel more than you think. I know of a 10+ caught in pirates on toledo, weighed in at Toledo town then released at the bridge. The fish was caught the next year with tag intact in 1215 area. Why the fish went north we will never know but the fact it chose one of the more famous areas for big fish is pretty crazy in it self.

I caught a 10+ in Indian mounds, weighed in at fin and feather and released. The fish was caught the next year in six mile. Fish went South instead of north where I caught it.
