Surprised they never got into the full-size SUV market. I know they offer the diesel in a Grand Cherokee, but I can't say I'd want tow much weight behind one.

People can gripe about the eco's economy (especially while towing) but it's tow ability is second to none in the class. It has similar economy to the 5.3, produces 87 lbs more tq and needs a whole lot fewer rpms to make it. That probably doesn't mean much to most soccer mom's, but it means something to people who appreciate a good tow engine.

I would buy an ecoboost over a 5.3 any day. I have always preferred fords approach to forced induction smaller displacement to increase fuel economy to GM/Ram's AFM and MDS. I haven't driven a new model GM 5.3 since the power bump etc. but I was able to get about a mile per gallon better average out of a 2013 3.5 ecoboost than I was out of my 2011 chevy 5.3 and the ecoboost easily outperforms it power wise.

LOL! Looks like this Truck vs SUV discussion turned into the usual USA vs Japanese discussion.

I have fished for over 30 years and have never towed with anything other than an SUV or, going back to before SUVs were popular, the old Chevy Blazer with Fiberglass top. I actually have no use for an open bed so the enclosed SUV, with access to it from inside the SUV at all times, (as opposed to a shell on a pickup) has always worked the best for me. I have towed with a Blazer, Tahoe, Avalanche and currently the Explorer Sport (which has the 365 HP Eco-boost engine like in the F-150) and all have been 4 wheel drive. I sometimes sleep in the back of the SUV on a futon or air-mattress which is nice and, sometimes, I carry my gear in the back of the SUV to include my rods which I carry with a system below the roof. For me, the SUVs make it very secure and handy to get to from either inside the vehicle, through the side doors, or the rear hatch. For small trailers that you cannot see with your mirrors, the ability to pop the rear hatch makes backing up a breeze. For the two times a year that I need an open truck bed...I borrow my buddys pickup.

I had a Suburban that was an absolute lemon. After 4 transmissions I finally got rid of it and I'll never own another GM vehicle.

Currently driving a 2005 Ford Explorer 254K, only one transmission problem when a relay went out. Can't complain about that at all

IMO and SUV is the way to go

Not that it would attract most but I've lived and dealt with owning advocate type vehicles. My Dodge was the "other" diesel when I bought it in 1999. My Allison is definitely not a cookie cutter and only few people buy it.
I was thinking about selling my truck and buying a BMW X5 35D diesel AWD in 2011 through 2013 and having it deleted which would make it a pretty good all around vehicle. A 3.0 liter diesel with all wheel drive and towing capabilities of 6000 lbs for towing the boat. Deleted it should average in the mid 20's driving around town and on the highway unloaded would be close to 30 mpg. Not bad for a 7 passenger luxury SUV. I think they are built in South Carolina.

If you read the ram ecodiesel forum you would think its a wonder I manage to make it 20 miles to work every morning and 20 miles back home every day. In reality I have almost 50k miles without one hiccup.

Got a f150 2006 230000 miles still drive to work every week.

If it adds anything to the thread, I pull my 22.5' fish and ski deck boat with a 2013 Dodge Durango with a 5.7L Hemi. Outperforms my F-150 that I pulled it with before.
Only catch is, I am a bed backer, not a mirror backer, so I have to put the seats down and open the hatch to be comfortable.

Pulled the boat for years with a 2001 5.3L Tahoe, but finally got rid of it at 230k miles. The Tahoe was absolutely trouble free all those years. Now pull with a 2009 dodge Ram Hemi. Hemi definitely pulls better and the truck handles the boat much better, but I still miss the locked enclosed area for putting rods and tackle.
Thinking about getting one of those hard tri-fold bed covers. Should solve the security issue...hopefully.

Love my Suburbans, on my 4th one in 35yrs now. Can't speak to the new ones since I prefer older burbs, my input is only truck vs suv. For fishing and hunting I'll take a burb any day. I love the added relative security and the ability to keep things stored out of the weather as well. In a pinch I can even camp in mine, and have many times.

I've used pickups as well, always had work trucks too, and they just don't work as well overall for me when it comes to outdoor stuff. So I have a truck for work, and a Suburban for play. As for putting a topper on a truck, just go with the SUV if that's the idea. Same physical size at that point with a much more usable interior space in a number of different ways.

Also, the added tail weight of an SUV is great for muddy or slimy ramps. I've launched at plenty of nasty ramps and if there's concrete down there a 7,000-8,000lb burb will find it.

The only Ford I'd even consider for this purpose would be an Excursion, due to sheer size. But even then I'll stick with the tried and true Burbs.

If you're not living on the edge, you're taking up too much space!
