Lost my wife last year in April. Haven't been able to get back in the boat. she was my fishing partner. Motor hasn't been started since end of 16. Any special precautions or steps to take before starting after sitting so long. I am ready to get back to fishing.

YOUR MILEAGE MAY VARY!

My boat sat up for almost a year while we were going thru my wife's pancreatic cancer treatments. All I did was check the lower unit oil, made sure the batteries were fully charged, and added 5 gallons of fresh fuel. It had about ten gallons of fuel in the tank already. It was hard to start, it would fire then die. I had to use jumper cables from my truck battery but it finally started and kept running. Water pump pumped fine, and after about thirty minutes of running, it ran and still runs fine. I do keep the fuel treated with Stabil. This motor has always been hard to start, but was a little more so this time. But that is all I did after the long storage.

No BS.. Just turn the key and crank her up.. I'd run on the muffs though to make sure everything is good before you drop her in the water.

Sorry to hear about your wife.. That's tough. Get back on the water !!

Sorry for your loss sir....10 gallons of fresh gas and a can of sea foam would likely clean her up good

You should consider purging all the fuel you can. I have a pro xs, and my service tech buddy did some steps: I pumped old fuel out via the boat's fuel line and an electric fuel pump. He sprayed fogging oil in cylinders and turned it over without plugs first. Then we put in plugs and fresh gas. It wasn't too hard to start after that.....

He was very adamant that I not try to start it without those steps.

Do not do that. At least dump the old gas. If it has water in the fuel you will be putting that into the motor.

Syphon as much of the old gas as you can
Then fill with fresh gas. Purge fresh gas through the lines. Fogging oil in the cylinders can't hurt either. Replace water separator with a new filter, replace the filter after a tank of gas is used. Gas sitting that long has accumulated moisture and has lost octane. This is common in vented fuel systems sitting as long as yours.

Welcome back to fishing, I hope it brings you much deserved joy and peace.

Tanks must have had a baffle at end of hose. Could not get a hose down to syphon any gas off. Have always used non ethanol gas. Took the boat and put about 20 gal of fresh non ethanol gas and 4 cans of Sea Foam . Took a while to get gas back in the system but she fired right up and ran like a top on the hose. Got her all cleaned up and ready to hit the water this week.

for sure sea foam to purge the system. i'd drain all the old gas that i could, if it's ethanol fuel, it already has phase separation. get as much out as you can and change the water/fuel filter. be sure it's a 10 micron filter. good luck and keep us posted. sorry for your loss.

Palestino-sorry for your loss

The Crappie Catching Machine ( Pontoon Boat) hadn't been started since October of last year and it had just been serviced with plans to run it at least one more time-never got around to running it but I did manage to pull the battery and keep it charged up. Today I drained the old non ethanol gas out , put 10 gallons of new non ethanol gas w Seafoam and Marine StaBil. Fogging oil in each cylinder after pulling the plugs and running just the starter with plugs out and fogging again with plugs in. Then torqued the plugs back in to proper specs and put electrical grease on them and their connectors. I forgot to pump the bulb up but she fired and ran anyway after about 7 seconds of cranking! I ran the Yamaha 115 hp 4 Stroke at high idle-1400 rpm for 10 minutes with the rabbit ears on for cooling and afterward did the flush also. Now I'm going to get her cleaned up and other beginning of year maintenance and she be ready banana

so sorry for your loss..
good to get back on the water

my dad was in the boat business and he told me to always disconnect the fuel line from the motor and run it until it dies, never leave gas in the engine if it was not going to be run again soon.

Works well for some of the older motors, not a good idea for oil injected motors etc. Not sure how it is for fuel injected motors.
