Are the blues still really shallow? I usually find them in 1-3 foot of water late winter and early spring but havent been out yet this year. Any tips are greatly appreciated. Thanks

Im hearing the mid deeps are producing more consistent fishing right now that the really shallow waters. I would start shallow then make your way deeper tell you find them

It is still hit and miss on the shallow flats adjacent to our cove and point. Lake level is down to where it is 3-4 feet deep in that area now. I've gotten a couple eaters in the past week, a channel and a blue, on cherry garlic chicken gizzards. Some good takedowns drifting in the cove out in deeper water but no solid hookups.
Last weekend I tossed out a large shad head under a float and came back the next day to no float in sight and 65# Power Pro fluttering in the breeze. Loosened up the reel drags a bit after that.
Will be interesting to see what my balloon rig with another big shad head dredges up tonight. It's usually dramatic over in that spot when there is good wind and a crashing barometer. Last semi-decent fish was about 3 weeks ago, a 12-pound blue @ 30".
Large carp are spawning in the shallow vegetation like mad at the moment. 1-2 fow. I'd expect the cats to not be too far behind.

Sometime between Friday morning and Friday evening a ~ 4-pound blue got hooked on the balloon rig with shad head. Two other rods with cut shad appeared to have been munched/cleaned by turtles. The neighbor picked up four decent eaters with minnows on throw lines tied to his floating dock in a few fow. Still a little slow but I'm encouraged.

Blue cats are shallow in my cove right now
Hooking a fish is like playing string with a cat. The exact size, shape, color of string matters less than how you wiggle it- and little cats are easier to fool than big ones. John Gierach

A little slower over my way, but still decent eaters here and there. Got a 7 or 8 pound @ 26" over the weekend and a couple eaters in the 4 pound range since. Still 50/50 on cut shad and cherry garlic chicken gizzards. Turtles are beginning to strip bait off the Santee rigs a bit in the shallowest areas.

We do have the turtles in our cove as well...
