I've seen people use braid for their main line and then for their leader line they use Mono. Is there a reason for this? I'm curious

I use a heavier braid main line with a slightly lower strength mono leader. 50lb main with 40lb leader. I tie my weight above a snap swivel then use a barrel swivel on my leader.

I do the opposite, I use a heavier leader than my main line because thats what takes the most abuse. Most people fish lighter leader so it doesnt spook the fish, but catfish are not line shy.

Cant really use braid as a leader because its too limp and will tie itself in knots and break.
Mono is clear, abrasion resistant and is a WAYY better choice for leader. I like 60lb test for my leader with 30lb mono main line.

If you can either quickly or quietly switch out shells, you can bring home almost anything.

I tried braided line once years ago as a leader and it didnt take me long to switch back to mono for the same reasons Capt Littlejohn stated. It also tangled very easily and at times was a bigger mess than I wanted to deal with. My preferred choice is 30 lb main line in mono with a 50lb leader line in mono.

If you're not living on the edge, you're taking up too much space!

I use a mono leader with braid because Power Pro is $20+ a spool for 300 yards. That's almost as much as I've paid for some of my Abu 6000's and about the same price as many of my rods (Big Game and King Kat). Unless you're in business (or maybe even if you are) when you're spooling 10 rods or more, you only want to be spending that kind of coin once a season.

20 pound test Trilene Big Game and a #18 trotline staging leader. No troubles with tangling and will out wear mono any day.
