so, I want to learn to spot shell beds on my graph...I would think all graphs (for the most part), graph them the same on Sonar, DI, and SI. What does the actual shell bed look like? What am I trying spot when idling around and graphing. I understand that map study prior to going to the lake is imperative to be successful in finding the spots...but, once I'm in that location, I need to know how to spot them on the trusty graph...

Any tips would be appreciated.

Thanks Gents!

Not sure what brand graphs you have but Humminbird has a red/green si,/di color pallet that is designed to find hard bottoms such as shell and rock. Once located you can go back over the area in another color pallet and get better details.

Another reason I need to switch to Humminbird.

It will show 2 bottom contour lines, you will have your bottom then below that will be another solid line.

Yep it's called a double echo. You see the water column, then the bottom, then distortion and what looks like another bottom. Often times the depth will read the second bottom.

If you have a color sonar screen find out which color indicates a hard bottom. That is how I have found them on Lake Fork.

I have been a Lowrance guy all my life but the new Hummingbird stuff is superior. Lowrance & Motorguide has some catching up to do.

Look for the shells on the shoreline and check out water in front of them. Dragging a t rig through them has an un mistakable chatter feel.

This. My Helix 9 does this on Guntersville.

Lowrance does have a color palette that shows hard/soft in their side imaging menu. It’s a funky green & blue, only useful for finding rock, etc.

ANY unit that has the imaging technology will show hard/soft bottom transition areas just by the intensity of the returns just like these hard bottom areas:

The original Humminbird Red/Green pallet was created just for that purpose with Red indicating the hard areas. Just easier to see with the two different colors. It is still adjustable for the intensity though.

With the newer Humminbirds there are more dual color imaging pallets you can use.
