Looking at getting a kayak finally. Narrowed it down between the two. Really like what the bonafide has going for it, but the Atak 140 is more "established" if you will. Just looking for some input from somebody that has had experience with wither. Leaning more towards the Bonafide.

The only issue with the Bonafide is that it comes pretty bare bones so you will have to add a lot of after-market additions to it, things like rod holders, more track, etc. From all of the reports I have seen, new buyers really like it and it has a very high seat position available on it (high and low). That makes a difference if you are going to get and up down quite a lot to stand.

Wilderness is more establised, no doubt, and I believe some of the talent left this company and joined the Bonafide camp. Chad Hoover used to fish out of a Wilderness I believe, was hawking the ATAK 120 when it first came out a year ago, then one year later he is all about Bonafides. My only thought about the ATAKs is they sure seem to ride low in the water and I think Chad or another kayak angler said they are very good for backwater shallows, coves and more. The low profile makes them less affected by wind.

Just to add some more confusion to your list, be sure and take a look at the brand new 2018 Native Slayer 12XC. It is priced aggressively, comes with a built in skeg, rod holders, it is chain drag ready, and a whole lot more. At 36.5" beam and 12'2" length, it sort of reminds me of a smaller version of the venerable Jackson Big Rig.

I know some people have complained about the attack being a very wet boat- lots of water in the floor area. If your a lighter guy that might not be an issue for you. I have not paddled the attack, just reading online. But I do have a bonafide and it is very dry and stable.

Brad, have you actually seen a Native Slayer 12 XC. I haven't even seen a picture of the boat yet, just a rendering as to what it will look like (maybe). It was suppose to be released in March, but I don't think that they hit the release date.

Craig, I haven't paddled either boat - just have seen them at a recent kayak show. One, love the hatch system on the Bonafide. How would you rate how shallow of water you can get into with that cool hull design? The Native XC promises to and Jackson Mayfly does seem to draft in very shallow water indeed. One reviewer said it best when he said that the Mayfly will float on wet grass.

I fish the flats often and sight fish and that is why this interests me.

One comment on the ATAK 140: that rear hatch doesn't look too useable while on the water. Looks like a nice place to transport rods, but getting a rod out while on the water looks crazy challenging.

Clay, no, I haven't seen one yet but they are likely coming soon and a Native retailer might have an update on expected delivery dates. No one ever seems to hit expected release dates!

If it is as depicted, the 12 XC, a moderate-sized Jackson Big Rig equivalent, and if it has the equipment it is supposed to have, Native builds really nice kayaks and it'd be my choice over other paddlers in this price and size range.

*** Agreed on all of these kayaks with hatches way out of reach. To me, if you can't reach them, access them on the water, storage and equipment in general, I really discount the value of the thing.

I don't know when it happened, but recently many manufacturers believe that it's ok to tell us a release date that they know that they will not meet. This practice rubs me the wrong way. The practice and philosophy is to get many people to "Pre-order Now" and then build the boat later. Like you said, this is not just a single kayak manufacturer, but rather industry wide.

The XC has been on my watch list for a while now. One concern is that it is only 12' 2" long and 36.5" wide. Wondering how it paddles. I think that the design is such that it will float in very skinny water, so it looks cool. I've actually reached out to several dealers with no news. Native has no contact email or phone number listed on their web site. They want you to go through a dealer.

I have to disagree with the "Barebones" comment. I think the Bonafide has a ton of standard features. The kayak is loaded with GT90 everywhere, the junk drawer is standard, seat is standard, and dry pod. Having owned both boats, I think the ATAK is a wetter ride if youre over 200 lbs, from water up through the scuppers. The Bonafide seat is much higher up and comfortable than the Air Pro Max on the Wildy. The Bonafide is one of the best if not the best paddle kayaks ive ever fished from. Mariner Sails has a demo day coming up I recommend you come and try them both out.

Well... I ended up pulling the trigger last night on the Bonafide ss127 in Cool Hand Blue. Ordered it from ACK and they said it will ship in 1-2 weeks, so now the wait will kill me! Every time I looked at another kayak I just ended up coming back to the ss127 because it had features that other kayaks didn't have that I really liked. I couldn't seem to find a "bad" review of it anywhere, even if somebody preferred another kayak over the ss127, they still really liked it. I'm 6' 260lbs so I'm not light in the least, I have plenty of table muscle, but, I'm in shape... round is a shape! Watching Chad Hoover paddle his Bonafide around gave me a good idea that it wouldn't have too much trouble with me in it. So all in all I'm sure that i will be happy with my purchase. Now all I have to do is order a PFD and paddle and I'll be ready to go.

It's a good enough kayak that I think it is equipped well enough; but, since Luther innovated in after-market areas related to gear track, rod holders and anchor trolleys, I am still surprised more of these aren't standard. I do see 4 pieces of gear track and to be honest, there's usually no need for just tons and tons of the stuff, especially not on a paddler where you won't be mounting anything on tracks in your paddle stroke area.

The junk drawer is great. All kayaks should take advantage of that space for quick reach, easy grabbing.

And, we may see a fully-equipped SS127 soon. As with other makes and models, often they come out with one specially rigged for heavy duty fishing.

Looks like we have a decision and it'll be a SS127. Can't go wrong with this!!!

Thanks to everybody for the info and opinions! I've got an email in to ACK right now, out of curiosity, to see why the 1 to 2 week wait time before it ships. Just curious if they ran out of inventory because people are buying them up, or if they don't keep them in stock and have to order them. I'm not joking... This wait is going to be the death of me.

Sure thing, timbertoes! There is a small lake over in a park in Sherman called Dean Gilbert lake, if I'm not mistaken, that isn't too far from me. It's in the Pecan Grove Park off of N Heritage Parkway. I've been looking at fishing there for while but never have. Might be a good place to try so I can get a familiar with the kayak. I have a private lake that I bank fish from too, so I'll definitely be taking it there quite a bit.

First time out, I'd take nothing but the kayak. I suppose it'd be okay to take one rod and a Plano Box, but that first trip out empty-handed will give you a chance to experiment with standing, balance points (primary and secondary), paddling speed, all sorts of things.

If you are an experienced kayaker, I suppose one could head back to the car and then bring out the gear after a short trial run.

Sounds like you have a few nice spots to get her wet for the first time. I'd always pick a small body of water first time out, over a big one, a lake or pond over a river.

Can't wait for first-hand reports. I still haven't crossed paths with one on the water but I suspect we will all see a lot of them very soon.

*** The new 10+ footer is due out very soon and could be a really top contender for easy carry paddle only kayaks.
