So, I am fairly new to kayaking and have a question as to how you all store your kayak....mine is in the garage on a couple of foam blocks but gets in the way....I was thinking of hoisting it but before I start that process, I thought I would see what/how everyone else does it...

I have a shed and a PVC rack. Garage options include hoisting, but there are also slings/racks you can attach to the wall, or wheeled racks you can store along the wall and wheel around as needed. I've also seen them stored vertically, bow downwards and resting on thick foam.

I use hoists from amazon - Rad Hoist

I take the hooks off that they come with and bolt a short piece of wood to the pulley instead. Then either attach a sturdier hook if i'm attaching to a handle or run 2" straps through the scupper plugs. I would just use the 2" straps but by going through the scupper plugs and under i'm able to get the kayak right up against the ceiling so i can hang it above where my garage door slides (i only have 16 inches between the ceiling and the garage door - both kayaks fit with ~1-2" to spare when it opens).

The reason i use the wood is to spread the strap so it drops straight through the scupper before cradling under the bottom of the kayak - keeps stress off the scuppers and carries the weight across the full strap across the bottom. If your interested I could send you some pics. I know some of the other guys have some nice hoist setups - but this was a nice balance of cost + easy for me to modify to meet my needs.

secondary advantage to this setup... when going camping i just back the utility/camping trailer into the garage.. and drop the kayaks right into place to tie them down.

I have two 7 foot 2x4�s about 5 feet apart attached vertically to the brick outside. I drilled two holes in each at a 45 degree angle and pounded in 3 foot metal poles from our trampoline surround that got tore up. I put several layers of red duct tape around the tips so I won�t hit my head on them and to keep water from getting in the poles. It works great so far and my rods are on a rod holder attached under the eave. It was all cheap and didn�t take to long to put together.
