I plan to go after some big catfish (may get lucky and hook a monster at 30 pounds or more) this weekend with cut bait. I have a big 10ft Ugly Stick with a large Penn spinning reel to match that I have not used in years. Due to age of line I will replace it. Any suggestions for a decent quality mono line. I will also use for large Red Fish at the coast in the next few years.
I don't plan to use braided line since the spool is so large and that type of line is so thin it would probably take 400+ yards.
Thanks,
Ken

Suffix titanium 25lb mono is quality. I like how it casts with my 7000c3. For my penn spinfisher v8500 LL I use pp slick8 30lb braid with lots of mono backing. I've had it on there for 2 years without changeout & it still works great.

I don't use mono so I don't really have any input on that topic.
But I don't really understand your reason for not using braid. Is it the cost because of how much you would need? You could put 300yrds of 50 lbs braid on that reel for $20. That should be able to handle pretty much any size catfish, assuming you tie your knots correctly and use your drag properly. I know Reds get big and fight really hard; but I don't know specifics. I do know that 50 lbs braid can handle a very large fish. Personally, I've caught a 60-70 lbs shark on that size line and had no issues. Probably could have handled a much larger one.
There are mixed opinions on this forum about braid vs mono. Since I mostly fish from shore, I like braid because I want heavy line and 50 lbs braid is far easier to cast than 50 lbs mono. If you're fishing from a boat and casting isn't an issue than that's a different story. I also want a lot of line on my reel in case I do hook a large fish and it pulls out a lot of drag. I can fit more braid on my reel vs the same weight of mono.
50 lbs may be overkill for most catfish but I use these same poles for shark fishing so I just keep the big stuff on there.

I use 25# offshore angler from bass pro With a 50# leader. I prefer mono over braid cause it seems to me braid chaffs to easy

I use the Cabelas Salt Striker 30lb mono for just about everything between cats and light offshore stuff.

I am another one to say good word about Big Game. If I need to pick some line, my first step always is: proof that this line is better than Big Game. If your arguments in favor of another line are serious, buy it. But it is not an easy task - to beat Big Game for any application! Having said that, my second strong choice would be Trilene XL - the best mono for spinning. Only you can solve this equation, man!
Light tackle carp fishing vet. PB carp: common 27lb - mirror 27.5lb - grassy 42lb - ghost 14lb

Stren. I've used it for years without a misfire. As long as you don't fall for the cheap stuff, any quality line will serve you well. I like the high-viz line when bottom fishing for cats.
