BnM makes a very good rod at a very affordable price. 8 foot would be perfect for what you’re trying to do, 8# suffix siege line.

If I wanted the absolute best, I'd go with a 7ft ML G Rod with a Shimano or Pflueger reel, spooled with 6-8lb hi visibility line. If you're on a budget, I'd go with a Pro Angler rod using the same reel and line set up.

Cabela's Crappie Rod by B'n'M in 8'and a quantum optix 20 reel with 6-8lb line. I use suffix tangerine. (budget)

Bonehead rod 8' with a Shimano or Pflueger reel, spooled with suffix tangerine 6-8 lb. (spending a little more)

After viewing all the responses, from guys that know a thing or two about crappie rods...I see you have been given rod options priced from $50 BassPro and Pro Angler to higher end at $200 G rod....Personally, I love the black colored Boneheads @ $100 buck a pop...however, there is a less expensive option and a really good rod for the money $20...Walmart micro series...if you can find a 7foot version, that would be a great option and when paired with the Flueger Trion, also at Walmart...it is a very good beginner rod, sensitive enough for crappie, and on the low end.

Within the next few weeks, I am going to try out some G-Rod options over at Thermocline Lures, and maybe the next big thing...Crappie Elite rods that TexBBq selling on the trading forum area, assuming I can find an outlet that has them in stock, so I can see if they pass my hands on muster. Anyway, you have been given some outstanding advice...just pick a price point and go for it...

For me I like as light of rod and reel I can get, and still maintain some quality.
I like the 1000 series spinning reels, Diawa and Shimano have some for around $25-$30,..
I shop at Cabelas and Bass Pro, there are several Crappie rods in the 8-10 foot range
for under $40, depends on your personal feel. I use 20 pound braid Power Pro yellow on all
my reels, and the add about a 15' mono leader, I like Trilene blue-clear in 8 pound test.

I don't think the reel matters but you do yourself a disservice if you don't buy a pro angler rod. To illustrate how tough those rods are I you them to striper fish with. I caught an 8 lb striper at PK this week on my 10 foot pro angler. Great pole for crappie too.

I started to use baitcaster reels for vertical jigging because they are easier to count your line out to a specific depth and they won't twist up your line as bad. As for rods, I have Wally Marshall Signature Series and ACC Stix for my fun fishing and then Pro Anglers for tournaments.

G Rod is okay but if you really want a top end rod, go with 7' G Loomis IMX or GLX ultra/light with Shimano Stradic reel. I've pulled in couple big hybrids with that rod.

All caught with G rod 9' crappie rod with Shimano Sahara 500 reel, 8lb J braid with 6lb leader.

A word of caution: if you are not an very experienced fish man, please DO NOT fight a 30lb fish with crappie rod. roflmao
