All things being equal but would you leave your job/profession if you could if money benefits etc were at least equal?

Money being equal? No way. I need at least 15% over what I have in order to make a move. I caved in and took 11.5% once, and I didn’t like the move.

I would consider it. Would depend on work schedule and time travelling to/from work. Our office is about to move 3 miles from my house so that will be a nice change.

More, less, the same, it doesn't matter if you think you would enjoy it.

Nope. Time and energy to learn new job, new people, plus retirement is only 7 years away. It would need to be 15-20% increase plus same authority for me to move.

Many years ago I fished 3 to 4 days per week for years, Didn't work that much and had enough to live comfortably.

I would happily go back to those times, seems now of days all I do is work. Money isn't that important to me anymore.

Only if could manage a ranch full time somewhere. But don't think there are any such jobs that will match my current pay.

A lot has to due with how the hours/call, time/off compare. And would I enjoy the new job more than I do my current one.

Deends on what it was. Being 61 and at my current job for 38 years I am entitled to full retirement so I would entertain the thought.

I was a field auditor for a market research company and took a 17% cut years ago to go into property management and it took me couple years to get back even but I ended making 5 times what I would have ever made in my old job.
wish I had done this years before because I also had more job security due to learning a profession (mall/shopping center mgmt.)that was in demand all across the country.
lot of factors to look at when changing jobs or professions and everybody's situation is different but my advice to a younger guy would be to look at what you are doing and where you are gonna be 20 years from now or longer.....ideally you want to have a skill that is in demand all over the country....that in itself is gonna make your employer treat you better and pay you more....

Simple answer, only if it's something I'd rather do and that if ALL things are equal. You also have to look at stability of the job which if it's the private sector can be volatile. (I've read none of the thread so this may have been addressed already.)

Advice? Wise men don't need it. Fools won't heed it.

Doubtful. About my only complaint for this job is that I'd like to actually get time off.

I took about a 35-40% pay cut a couple years ago, but I went from a job I hated to pretty much a dream job. That made it worth it to me.

Can't even imagine what it would take to get me to change jobs. My wife and I both work for the same company, I am surrounded by friends I've known most of my life, I live less than an hour from 5 lakes that I know like the back of my hand, I make good money and my commute is 46 seconds lol. Blessed and stress free

I’ve already had three full careers. Each one totally different. Getting ready to retire from the last one (@ 60) and have had offers for a fourth. Considering it closely but I think I’m ready to settle down. Navy, pharmacist, pediatric dentist and commercial pilot(?)

I always thought that i would not , but the company has decided to ' go another direction ' after 26 years. Going thru this at 50 blows

To switch jobs, would need to be about 15-20% more to make it worthwhile. Also, big factors, the hours, is there an on-call requirement, travel, weekends....etc. Lots of factors will help determine if it is worth it or not.

Switching professions is a little trickier. Would have to be a little more money too and I would need to really enjoy doing it. Must have salary growth potential as well. Bonuses possibilities often help make that decision.

I may change jobs/employer some day, but not profession. I like this oilfield bidness.

I have a pretty kush gig and I enjoy what I do. Every job is going to have BS along with it. If it wasn't something I was passionate about I would stay put. If I could run cows, bale hay, and have the same income and benefits, I would switch in a heartbeat. But would I switch careers to do something I'm not passionate about, nope.

I was retired for 7 days. Retired Feb. 23. Then March 5th stared a new job/new company after 27 years with the same company.

Similar industry but quite a bit different. Lots of new things to learn and stressful at times but it will be fine. Work har do what you are supposed to do.

They interviewed over 100 different people before they hired me. They put me through 9 rounds of interviews. It was no doubt an evaluation. Better pay than my last sales gig, better company best I can tell. Time will tell.

I made the change 27 Year’s ago from working on industrial control systems to selling them. It was a big step then but wouldn’t change a thing other than some really bad hang overs!!!. Country boy with money in his pocket can get in some trouble on the Richmond strip in Houston!!!. I came out way better when I made the change 27years ago than retiring from a dead end job and oil company pension.

I just turned 62. Will be getting my pension from the technology company I retired from starting April 1.

Can’t complain about two pay checks until I decide to punch out and retire for good.

Not for equal. Better pay and match my vacation or at least get close. Did this almost 9 years ago as I had full retirement and could retire and build another nest egg.
Unless you really don't like where you are working I don't see the advantage.

I made a radical change after 23 years in one business and then worked in a radically different
one for 18 years. It worked out well for me.

If we are talking Mark Perry..giving up FD for the same pay, then yes assuming you would be going to a lower risk profession and a better on/off schedule.

It all rides on so many factors that must be accounted for in order to make that decision.

Mark ,
Being from the same background I honestly can't say,,,,, the Fire service is great. But all things change.

If something came along idk, but the schedule, pay, and reward would be hard to replace.

I could not. I have been eligible for retirement for 4 years now and plan to retire when I get to 66 sometime next year.

I like the job for the money. Working in a job that has minimal requirements is depressing but I work hard and feel sorry that the public does not get rid of the institution where I work. Or mandate a change there.

If you are talking about moving to a whole new career doing something totally different with the same pay, benefits, etc....then absolutely YES. I could use a change after doing this for 26 years. If you are talking about doing the same thing just somewhere different, then No, I ma happy where I am at and I am 10 years from retirement (I Hope).

I'm not going anywhere soon. Gonna do my 20 and get out which is a few years away.

One thing is for certain though, what I do after I retire will not involve fire or EMS service. My plan is to never step foot in a fire station again after I retire. Love what I do but when this chapter is over it's over.

No way. I've been doing this for couple decades and don't have any problem getting up in the morning to go to work. I'll be leaving it for retirement soon enough as it is.

Mark and all of you fire and EMS guys. my hats off to you. I don't know how you guys do it but thanks to everyone of you for the services you provide.
Now to your question I was down sized after 28 years with the power company. Officially I retired but when they tell you they are doing away with your job it damn sure wasn't voluntary retirement. Then came the fun part the company figured out they didn't have anyone to do what I was doing so they hired me back as a contractor but I added a few stipulations. First if I didn't want to do the job I didn't do it. Second I went from making $32 an hour to making $55 and hour.(I had their nuts in a vise) In short I went from working 60 t0 70 hours a week with no overtime pay because I was a salaried employee to be my own boss as a contractor getting paid for every minute I was on the job.
So don't be afraid to make a change and especially don't be afraid to ask for the moon because you just might get it.
